LAWSUIT RE: PORT OF ORCAS and DEER FENCE

Pilots need to abide by TFRs during Olympics

posted 02/03/2010
Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) established by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regarding the 2010 Olympics are in effect from January 29 through March 24, 2010. The details of NOTAM 0/3196 FAA WEB SITE and can also be accessed through the Port of Orcas' WEB SITE

Port Director Bea vonTobel sent an email out reminding pilots of the restrictions. There have already been two occurrences where the aircraft pilots did not "squawk" when in the zone. Staff from Whidbey Naval Air Station and the FAA have been in contact with one of the pilots and with vonTobel.

Eastsound Airport is outside the TFR and is considered a "fringe airport". The following VFR operations have been approved:

  • Pilots are not required to file a flight plan

  • Due to the proximity of the TFR boundary and to assist federal agencies in identifying aircraft and pilot intent, pilots arrive or departing these airports must squawk the specific corresponding airport transponder code: -Eastsound/Orcas Island Airport (KORS): 1207

  • The specific transponder code indicates the pilot's intent to arrive or depart the respective airport or enter the TFR via the shortest routs

  • Pilots are not required to contact ATC unless otherwise directed.

If violations continue, Minard Thompson, from the FAA, told vonTobel more restrictions will be added.

Pilots are strongly encouraged to read the restrictions and requirements on the NOTAM 0/3196 .
