Anthony Crawford Richardson

Memorial Concert 4 p.m. May 25 Orcas Center

May 30, 1949 - April 21, 2008

Anthony Crawford Richardson was born in Portland, Oregon on May 30, 1949. Anthony's early exposure to the interconnected worlds of science, nature and the spirit led him to a lifetime of exploring new ideas and invention. As a child he had a special connection to the natural world.

His mother raised Appaloosas and his family owned a 460-acre ranch in Central Oregon. He was a competent horseman at 7, performing in shows and wrangling horses. He also had the sensitivity of a horse whisperer.

His father, a professional engineer who founded the Portland Electronics College, taught him about electronics, TV/radio technology, audio engineering and photography; as a kid, he had a darkroom and built his own stereo systems. He started his career in electronics engineering.

His growing interest in health and healing led him to Camp Indralaya on Orcas Island where he took advanced courses in Therapeutic Touch. He used his skills to train nurses on the technique and opened a counseling and healing practice in Portland. With the advent of computing, Anthony saw an opportunity to combine his technical and helping skills.

At Analogy, Inc. he trained NASA, GM and other international customers on sophisticated simulator software. He was recognized at Analogy for his problem solving and trouble-shooting abilities.

After meeting Janice in 1990, they followed their dream to live close to nature in the beauty of San Juan Islands. On Orcas, they founded two businesses, CompU-help and DoubleRich Design.

He had recently started a videography business to develop his interest in the art of filmmaking. Customers appreciated Anthony's patient, personal support and website expertise. He had a talent for explaining technical things in a simple understandable fashion.

He was a natural musician. He performed in high school musicals and sang in a SingOut 67 convention. He wanted to be a bass guitar player but couldn't due to a hand injury, so he put his passion into sound engineering and singing. On Orcas, he was a member and leader of the Choral Society and the Orcas A Capella Singers.

A peak experience was traveling to Spain in 2003 for the Europa Cantat XV. He loved helping his wife create the Dragonfly Garden sanctuary on their property. He spoke on "Developing Energy Awareness" and "Spiritual Astrology" as a part of the Saturday Sunrise Talks in the garden.

On Orcas he further explored his interest in personal growth, health, healing, and metaphysics. A follower of homeopathy, he let go of his earlier love of Belgium dark chocolate and fine wine. A natural philosopher, he believed that life was an opportunity to grow into greater consciousness and love. He practiced appreciation and gratitude every day including his last day on Earth.

On Monday, April 21, while mowing tall meadow grass around the Dragonfly Garden, Anthony suffered a fatal heart attack.

The A Capella Singers will perform a memorial concert at 4 p.m. on May 25, 2008 at the Orcas Center. To help during this sudden transition, in lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Janice Richardson Dragonfly Garden fund at Islander Bank in Eastsound, Orcas Island.

He is survived by his wife of 13 years, Janice and her children Anami Mazur of Rockaway, OR; Chelsea and Charleigh Pearson of McMinnville, OR; and Forest Pearson of San Diego, CA; sisters Barbara Siebert of Coeur d'Alene, ID and Elizabeth "Betsy" Ruble of Mt Vernon, WA; brother William E. Richardson, Jr. and wife Sharon of Portland, OR; and sons Anthony Joseph Richardson and his wife Dawn and grandson Brandon of Bellingham, WA, and Nicholas Adam Richardson of Portland, OR.
