Letters about Ben White's column

Ben White laid to rest

posted 08/04/05
Friends, family and fellow environmental activists gathered together Wednesday, August 3, 2005 to remember Ben White. The San Juan Island man died July 30 after battling cancer for several months. Members of the Natural Guard, trained by White, served as pall bearers. His coffin was created by island woodworkers who used salvaged wood, including mahoghany from the original Sea Shepherd.

A memorial service attended by more than three hundred people took place at the former Mariella Inn in Friday Harbor. People wearing turtle costumes flanked the gravesite. White led a group of "turtles" in the WTO protestes in Seattle.

Many of the people also attended the graveside service which included a tribal blessing and ended with a moving version of "Amazing Grace".

Pieces of cedar were sprinkled in the grave as people bid farewell to the 53-year-old man who had lived his life passionately acting on his convictions.
