Carey A. PophamJanuary 6, 1921 - September 4, 2007 Carey A. Popham of Friday Harbor passed away Tuesday morning (Sept. 4, 2007), in the Seattle Harborview Medical Center. Carey suffered a fall on a trip to the interior of Vancouver Island August 30. Carey was born in Kansas City Missouri, "The show me State". She grew up with her sister Zora, in the oil fields in Taft California. She and her sister survived the Great Depression living with their mother, who owned a Beauty Shop in Taft. Women still needed their hair done even thought money was tight. The family moved to Santa Barbara in 1935, where Carey completed high school. One of her teachers encouraged her to apply to Stanford University’s nursing school. Carey met her future husband Fred in 1940, when she enrolled in fencing class because Fred was the class instructor. August 26, 1942, Carey and Fred were married in the Ft. Lewis chapel, in a military ceremony and then enjoyed a two-day honeymoon cruising on the Washington ferry, Kalakala; before Fred and his Army Regiment were sent to Hawaii. Carey returned to Stanford to continue her nursing training and Fred soon began Officer Candidate School in Aberdeen Maryland. Carey joins Fred in Maryland and in 1944 their first son Jerry in born. With the end of the war, returned to Stanford to complete her resident requirements for her nursing degree. In 1947, Carey’s second son Doug was born, and Fred went to work for the California National Guard. Carey and her family move to Camp San Luis Obispo. In 1951, Fred was moved to State headquarters in Sacramento, and Carey and the family follow. In 1955, Folsom Dam was built east of Sacramento, and the family buys its first boat, a 16-foot runabout. The boating bug was hatched. Once Jerry and Doug were old enough to get along without her Carey got a part-time nursing job at Sacramento Sutter Hospital working in the infant ward. In 1970, Fred retired and he and Carey pull up roots, sold their home and bought a 55’ boat. With their new puppy "Heidi" they soon left San Diego on a six-year traveling adventure. They sailed down the Pacific Coast through the Panama Canal and around the Caribbean, ending up again Maryland where they sold the boat, bought a car and return to California. Their stay in California was short and they relocated in 1977 to the Westside of San Juan Island, building their own home overlooking Haro Strait. Once the new home was completed the adventure bug returned and a new boat was purchased and Carey and Fred began a 27-year period exploring the West coast from Puget Sound up as far north as Lituya Bay Alaska. Carey loved nature and friendly people and was happy to find both in the San Juans. During her period in Friday Harbor, Carey was active in:
