Caroline Lee Pope

1916 - March 3, 2007

Caroline Lee Pope, formerly a resident of Salisbury, CT, where she was a long-time peace activist, gardener, community volunteer, and affordable housing advocate, died peacefully on March 3rd, 2007 in Friday Harbor at age 91. She moved to Friday Harbor in 2005 to be close to her family, and lived for most of that time at Eugene Cuomo's and Gail Garrett's R house, enjoying the loving care provided by them and their excellent staff.

Caroline was born in England in 1916, began her education there and in France, then moved to Greenwich, CT and Harwichport, MA with her family. She attended Cranbrook Institute of Art and Science. In 1943 she married Gus Pope, an archeologist, and the couple lived in several states before settling in Connecticut in 1957.

Caroline enjoyed sailing, skiing, rock gardening, vegetable gardening, and travel, and contributed countless volunteer hours to her town. She served on many community organizations, planted trees and flowers about town for the enjoyment of all, and worked hard to preserve the character and diversity of the Town of Salisbury, where she lived for almost 50 years. Although her health did not permit her to get out in the community here, she made significant contributions to a variety of local organizations.

Predeceased by her husband, Gus Pope, her son, Sam Pope, three brothers and a sister, Caroline will be greatly missed by: her son Chris Pope and with his wife Betsy, of Friday Harbor; her daughter-in-law Anne Pope, of Friday Harbor and Portland, OR; her grandchildren Mary Wells Pope and husband Bryce Gartrell, Ben Pope, Sarah Pope and husband Adam Greene, all of Portland OR; grandson Saxton Pope of New York City; great grandsons Sam and Asa Gartrell; and a brother and sister-in-law, Jolly and Noelle Lee, and their family in France. A number of nieces, nephews, and their families, as well as many friends also remember her with great affection.

A celebration of her life will be held in Salisbury CT in June.
