Catherine SachseJune 6, 1921 to July 29, 2007
Catherine was born to Annie Skelton Petrie in Conneaut Lake Park, Pennsylvania. She came west to Los Angeles, California with her mother in 1930 and spent the next 50 years there. She was a beautician, a homemaker and mother, a church clerk and a housekeeper for various elderly friends. Her husband, Elmer Sachse, died in 1963. She moved to be near family in Portland, Oregon in the early 1980s and made a final move to San Juan Island in 2001, first as a resident of Carter’s Place, then Islands Convalescent Center. Although she lived in Friday Harbor for only six years, she truly loved the island and the people she met. Catherine leaves behind her daughter and son-in-law, Elaine and Dave Pretz of Friday Harbor; beloved grandson Mike Pretz of Melbourne, Florida and nephew Bob Webster of Santa Monica, California. This is less an obituary than a warm and loving thank you from her family to the many people that were there for Catherine and for us during the final years of her life. We thank the entire staff of Islands Convalescent Center for their care and compassion and being her “daily” family; nurses Cindy, Terry, David, Todd, Ann and Linda for their tenderness in her last hours; Tina Fisher for her endless supply of great ideas; Lynda Howell for her wonderful laugh and proving that no medicine is more effective than a good haircut; Randi Dooley Park for her professionalism and extraordinary support. Thanks also to Claudia and the folks at Carter’s Place for their wonderful home and the gracious island welcome Catherine was given; Dr. Gossom for his expert care, his willingness to consider options and solve problems; the EMTs in Friday Harbor for their response and gentleness. And finally, a big hug to Barbara Marrett for so many reasons. No formal memorial is planned per Catherine’s wishes. In the spirit of her lifetime of generosity and service to others, we request that you perform a kindness for someone in her honor. For those wishing to make a memorial contribution, we suggest donations to Wolf Hollow Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, PO Box 391, Friday Harbor, WA 98250 or to a charity that benefits young children or animals. We respectfully request no flowers. |
