Edward James "Jim" FunkMarch 4, 1919 - Aug. 23, 2007
Former Juneau resident Edward James "Jim" Funk died Aug. 23, 2007, in Lacey, Wash. He was 88. He was born March 4, 1919, in Great Falls, Montana to Mabel and Edward Rea Funk. He married Helen Josephine Windecker, of Ballentine, Mont., in 1944. They both served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war, they moved to Ketchikan so Jim could take a job with Pan American Airlines. In 1962, they moved to Juneau, where he ended his career in air transportation as the station manager for Alaska Airlines, retiring in 1973 and moving to Friday Harbor in 1978. Jim will be remembered for his enthusiasm for riding motorcycles, boating, hunting, cars, woodworking and his wonderful sense of humor. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years; parents; and two baby granddaughters. He is survived by his sister, Pat Porro of Great Falls, Mont.; four children, Janet Lyle and her husband, Sandy, of Lincolnville, Maine; Bob Funk and his wife, Pam Varni, of Juneau; Julie Voorhees and her husband, Casey, of Olympia, Wash.; and Carrie Smith and her husband, Tim, of Juneau; seven grandchildren, Becky Frost, Christa Brey, Sandy Lyle, Tyler and Cole Voorhees, Nona Hamilton-Head and Carmen Smith; and two great-grandchildren. At his request, his ashes will be placed with his wife's at a special spot in Southeast Alaska. |
