George W. Dengler

August 13, 1928 - November 6, 2007

posted 11/11/2007
George W. Dengler died peacefully at home on Lopez Island on November 6, 2007 of pancreatic cancer.

He was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina on August 13, 1928 to Clara Schluttenhofer Eimer and Hellmuth Eimer. They had left Germany because of the severe post World War 1 depression and economic chaos, and were seeking opportunity for a better life. The dreams of a new life did not materialize there, and the family decided to move to New York in 1930.

A sister was born in New York in 1931. By 1932 the parents thought it best for the children to live with their grandparents in Germany until things stabilized for them.

In 1938, George returned to New York to his mother who had remarried. There he attended school, became a scout leader, and graduated from Hofstra University with a B.S. in Biochemistry, followed by graduation from New York University, Bellevue Medical Center in 1955.

George then served as Captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps for two years at Fort Lewis, Madigan Army Hospital in Tacoma, WA.

George married Hildegard Markscheffel in 1952 and children followed; Suzan, the twins Joann and Karen, and Steven.

George practiced in Springfield, VT and Plattsburg, NY before moving permanently to Washington State in 1961. After working for 13 years in a large Family Practice Group in Mt. Lake Terrace, the family was ready to accept the challenge of developing the first fulltime medical practice which was offered by the citizens of Lopez Island. After serving the community for 20 years, George retired, but continued to be a backup for the clinic, and last treated patients there in December 2006.

He is survived by his wife Hildegard of 55 years, his children Suzan Golodoff, and husband Ben of Unalaska, AK, twin daughters Joann and Karen of Seattle, and son Steven, and wife Tina, and grandsons Kurtis and Kevin Dengler of Lopez Island, WA, and sister Ingrid Hesse and family of Wantagh, NY.

Memorial service and burial at Center Church, Lopez Island, November 12, 2007.
