Howard Deets Garber

May 28, 1933 - August 4, 2007

Howard Deets Garber, 74, a resident of Lopez Island and former Seattle area resident, passed away on August 4, 2007 at his home. Howard was born on May 28, 1933, in Centralia, the son of Victor B. and Adamae (Deets) Garber. Howard had lived in Centralia and Everett before moving with his family to Seattle in 1950.

He graduated from Highline High School in 1952 and the University of Washington with a Masters Degree in Education and Biological Science in 1957. He began his teaching career at Rainier Beach High School and remained there for many years before health issues required him to substitute teach at many other schools in the Seattle Public School system, before his retirement.

He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the National Education Assn. and the National Rifle Association. In 1988 Howard moved to his home on Lopez Island where he loved it so much and nothing made him happier than having friends and family come to visit; or to share his memories of teaching his Biology students. In years past he loved to hunt and fish.

Howard is survived by a sister and spouse, Lorettamae and Robert A. Schneider of Burlington, WA; sister-in-law, Ardith Garber of Federal Way; nephews, Brian, Kirk and Eric Garber of Federal Way, Rob Schneider of Burlington; nieces, Gloria Kyle of Mt.Vernon and Marilyn Olson (Rick) of Auburn; an aunt, Dorothy Deets of Burlington, many cousins, former students and special friends, Sandy and Marty Landers of Kent; the Lovejoy family, Mary Ann Riggs, as well as the many other kind caregivers and friends of Lopez Island.

He was predeceased by his parents and two brothers, Victor Bruce and Kenneth Donald Garber. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 25th, at 12 Noon, at the Center Church on Lopez Island. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Lopez Island Senior Services or the Lopez Volunteer Fire Dept. and Emergency Medical Technicians.

Arrangements are in the care of Evans Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., Anacortes and the San Juan Islands. Share memories of Howard and sign the online guest register at www.evanschapel.com.
