Margaret Marie SchulzJanuary 2, 1928 - December 14, 2007
Margaret Marie Waters was born January 2, 1928 to Kenneth and Ruth Waters in San Francisco, California. On Friday, December 14, 2007 Margaret slipped away gently into death at her Chico home while in the loving presence of her family. At the age of two she and her parents moved to San Jose, California, where she was raised and educated. While Margaret was in elementary school her parents divorced. Later Ruth married Abe D'Innocenti, a wonderful man who was very influential in Margaret's life. Margaret graduated from San Jose High School in 1945. After graduating she found her dream job, which was working in the jewelry department of a leading department store (Harts) in the Bay Area. She worked there until she married. On November 2, 1947 she married Walter Evan Schulz at the Episcopal Trinity Church in San Jose, the same church that Walter's parents were married. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this year. Margaret was very active in this church especially during her teen years. She spoke fondly of how progressive it was at giving young people a safe and fun place to be together in fellowship. After the newlyweds honeymoon they made their home north of Orland in the Capay district where they lived for almost 20 years. It was here they raised their two children Carin and Michael. Margaret was involved in many things at different times including being the leader of a troop of Brownies and Girl Scouts, for many years she was a dedicated member of the Junior Woman's League, and was a member of the Grange. For a few short years after selling the ranch, they lived in Corning, Sacramento, and Hamilton City before settling in Chico in 1978. They also have a home at West Sound in the area where her grandparents, Ole S. and Nana E. Hagen were early homesteaders on Orcas Island. The Hagens raised three children on the Island, Alma Van Moorhem, Ruth D'Innocenti, and Oscar Hagen. Margaret was an excellent cook and avid gardener. She took great pride and pleasure in her family, home, and gardens and had so many types and varieties of beautiful flowers and shrubs. She used to say, "You can't be too thin, have too much money or too many flowers". She would then laugh out loud and get back to planting more yellow flowers. During their retirement years Margaret and Walter loved traveling in their R.V. and took many trips all over the United States, including Alaska, and Mexico. They always returned home with great stories and photos of their adventures and their new friends. Margaret was a dedicated and loving wife and mother. She placed great value on her many friendships. She cared. She truly cared about the people in her life. When Margaret smiled she really did glow and the room always seemed a bit brighter, making everyone in it happier. She was a blessing to all who knew her. Those left that will miss her include her husband, Walter Schulz; daughter, Carin Schulz; son, Michael Schulz; granddaughter, Carina McCormack (Nolan), 2 great-grandchildren, Jonathan and Lily; brother-in-law, Robert Schulz (Patrica); sister, Hazel Hall (Kenneth); sister-in-law, Barbara D'Innocenti; and seven nieces and nephews and their children. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Joe D'Innocenti. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., on Friday, January 4, 2008 at Woodlawn Cemetery at Eastsound, Orcas Island with Pastor Jim Hardy officiating. Arrangements are in the care of Evans Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Inc., Anacortes, WA and San Juan Islands.
