Fire prevention week at Friday Harbor Elementary School involves every student from kindergarten through fifth-grade. Friday Harbor firefighter Susan Risser said the curriculum has been in place since 1992. "Some of our cadets remember participating," she said.

Kindergarteners watch firefighters put on firefighting gear. First-graders learn how to stop, drop and roll. District #3 firefighter Carolyn Hudson's dalamation, Dottie, demonstrates the technique.

Second-graders dial 911. A phone system is set up at the school. Each student makes up a scenario, dials 911, and talks to a "dispatcher". Students give their name, address, and phone number. Teachers are given the information later and check to make sure each student knows their address.

Third graders practice getting out of a smoke-filled room. A bedroom is set up in the gym. A smoke machine pours smoke into the room and the students have to exit and gather with their "family" at the family meeting site.
