San Juan Island School District Expands Griffin Bay School Programs

posted 08/27/2007
Griffin Bay Virtual Academy (GBVA) is the newest addition to Griffin Bay alternative schools offered by the San Juan Island School District. The GBVA program serves students in kindergarten through eighth grade and is designed to support home school parents who wish to provide a comprehensive curriculum to their children. The District has contracted with K-12 (www.k12.com) who has become the national leader in providing individualized, one-to one learning solutions for home school students. Griffin Bay teachers provide instructional coaching and coordinate learning plans with families in the program. Superintendent Michael Soltman said, “The District is excited about providing this learning opportunity to students in our community. A parent’s commitment is to provide 5 hours of instruction daily to their children, using the curriculum, on-line resources, and District support. The pace of the curriculum is flexible creating opportunities for parents to tailor the learning to meet the individual needs of their children,” he said. Parents interested in this program can contact Griffin Bay Schools for more information – 378-2211.
