Marine science students headed to Bermuda

The four members of Friday Harbor High School's National Ocean Science Bowl team - (Left to right:) Elliot Thomsen, Brady Ryan, John Fyrqvist, Jacky Elder - left Monday, July 2004 for their week-long Bermuda trip. The team won the trip when they came in second in the NOSB competition in North Carolina this spring. Coach/teacher Marc Vermeire and his wife Deb accompanied the team. And no, Bermuda is not in the Bahamas.

With a trumpet blaring, parents, students, school staff and the baseball team welcomed four Friday Harbor High School students home from South Carolina.

Brady Ryan, Jacky Elder, Elliot Thomsen and John Fyrqvist placed second in the Seventh Annual National Ocean Sciences Bowl Monday, April 26, 2004. They won a week-long trip to Bermuda this summer. Their teacher and coach Marc Vermeire didn't make it onto the ferry and missed the warm welcome home.

Friday Harbor High School placed second in the Seventh Annual National Ocean Sciences Bowl in Charleston, South Carolina. Brady Ryan, Jacky Elder, Elliot Thomsen and John Fyrqvist have won a research trip to Bermuda in July. The Friday Harbor High School Students will arrive home Tuesday, April 27, 2004. The team is coached by teacher Marc Vermeire.

The first place team is from Mission High School in Northern California. That team came in second last year and has competed for the last four years.


Friday Harbor secures at least 3rd at
Annual National Ocean Sciences Bowl

Friday Harbor High School secured at least a third-place finish after two rounds of the Seventh Annual National Ocean Sciences Bowl in Charleston, South Carolina.

"We're stoked," said Marc Vermeire, Friday Harbor's coach. "We're guaranteed to make it into the prize round."

Friday Harbor's team of Brady Ryan, Jacky Elder, Elliot Thomsen and John Fyrqvist won their regional competition -- the Orca Bowl -- in February and are competing against 23 other regional teams at the national bowl April 24-26, 2004.
