Students study science on Snowgoose

Photos and story contributed by Janelle Teasdale

posted 05/13/03
Friday Harbor Elementary School students spent half a day aboard the research vessel, the Snow Goose on Thursday, May 8, 2003. The field trip was an extension of their year long study of marine life and the geography of the San Juan Islands.

Students had an opportunity to visit four learning stations aboard the vessel.

  • The navigation station included a look at charts and a chance to steer the vessel.

  • The water quality station included tests for salinity and temperature at various depths.

  • A net was lowered in the water to capture plankton and then the plankton was studied with the aid of microscopes at the third station.

  • The fourth station included seamanship and study of the vessel itself.
