posted 03/08/04
Friday Harbor fifth-grader Dylan Nelson and eighth-grader Dylan Marriner are in the top 100 students who will compete in the state Geography Bee in Tacoma April 2, 2004. The winner will represent the state in the National Geography Bee.

The first-place finisher at the state level wins $100 and a trip to Washington, D.C. Second-place winner receives $75 and a prize, third-place wins $50 and a prize. All participants receive a t-shirt and a certificate. Last year's state winner, James Williams, a 14-year-old from Vancouver, Washington, went on to win the national contest.

According to the National Geographic Web site: The 55 state and territory winners meet at National Geographic Society headquarters in Washington, D.C., for the national competition. The number of contestants is narrowed to ten finalists, who compete for a $25,000 college scholarship. The second- and third-place winners receive $15,000 and $10,000 scholarships, respectively. Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek moderates the final competition.

Friday Harbor Speller places 5th at 2003 regional bee

posted 04/03/03
Michelle Mullin, an 8th grade student at Friday Harbor Middle School, placed 5th in the Regional Spelling Bee in Mount Vernon on Saturday, March 26, 2003. Mullin was the school spelling champion at the Friday Harbor Middle School Spelling Bee in February.

She competed with 55 other school champions from throughout the northwest region of the state. The regional bee is sponsored by the Skagit Valley Herald and occurs annually in March. This year's bee was held at Bayview Elementary School.

Mullin's performance was brought to a close as she missed the word 'syncopation. She said, "I mistakenly used an i instead of a y." It took ten rounds for Michelle to be eliminated and her successful words included, 'cornucopia' and three words she had never heard before, but "lucked out and spelled them correctly."

Middle School Principal Court Bell said, "We think it was more than luck!"
