Roberson resigns; says family and work deserve attention

posted 02/10/01
Tracy Roberson, tired of compromising either her commitment to family, work or team, resigned after guiding students in the Friday Harbor High School girls basketball program for 10 years.

"I demand 100 percent of my players. I also demand that of myself," Roberson said. "It’s not fair to continue coaching when I can’t give 100 percent."

Her job and her family deserve more of her attention and time, Roberson said. "It’s not fair to my employer, my players and my family."

Roberson coached the Friday Harbor varsity squad five years, the assistant varsity two years and helped as a volunteer coach before that. She told her players her plans on Thursday, Feb. 8, the day before her last contest. I’ll miss the players, but I won’t miss the road trips and the late boats home," she said.

This year’s team -- 4-16 overall and 1-11 in the Northwest A League -- didn’t post the wins they hoped to, but shared Roberson’s commitment to "excellence." They kept battling in nearly every contest, no matter what the deficit. "All of them were willing to do anything I asked them," Roberson said.

Her successor likely would have more success if she or he were a teacher or staff member. Such a person would have daily interaction with players and that would give them more opportunities for "pumping up" the team, Roberson said. "I really hope they can find someone within the school system."

Wolverines keep fighting in coach’s final contest

posted 02/10/01
Friday Harbor girls basketball team wanted a win in their last game of the season, not just for themselves, but their coach, Tracy Roberson. Although Concrete overcame a couple of rallies for a 55-44 victory Friday, Feb. 9, Roberson was still proud of her feisty team in her final contest as the Wolverines coach.

"We played our hearts out. Our players would not give up," said Roberson, who told her players of her plans to resign earlier this week.

Senior Katie Earley, bustling baseline to baseline, led the Wolverines with 16 points. Senior Alisha Reitan, in her first and only hoop season, scored a personal record 10 points. Kelly Domico, also a senior in her first hoop season, hit a free throw. Krysta Brem had 11 points, Erica Percich snatched 7 rebounds and Sissy Carlton had 2 points and 6 rebounds.

Friday Harbor finished 1-11 in Northwest A League play and 4-16 overall.

Friday Harbor went on a 15-4 run in the fourth quarter at Orcas Saturday, Feb. 3, but the Vikings held on for a 38-35 victory -- their first Northwest A League win of the year.

"I'm proud of them for not giving up, being determined and scrapping their way back into the game," Friday Harbor coach Tracy Roberson said.

The Vikings avenge an earlier loss to the Wolverines. Orcas is 1-10 in league and 2-13 overall and Friday Harbor is 1-9 and 4-14 for the season.

"Orcas played a great game," Roberson said. She added the Vikings made "a good defensive effort."

The Wolverine shooters struggled most of the game. "There was a lid on our basket," Roberson said.

Friday Harbor's offense also was hindered after point guard Krysta Brem sat out the second and third quarters with a sore ankle. Her replacement, Kelsea Peterman, "did a really good job," Roberson noted.

Erica Percich, who finished with 9 points, 12 rebounds and 5 steals for the Wolverines, was "a pretty strong presence in the middle," Roberson said. "Erica had a great game."

Katie Earley paced Friday Harbor with 12 points, 11 rebounds and 4 steals. Brem finished with 5 points, Alisha Reitan 3 and Kati Wilson 2.

Zippy Friday Harbor girls hoop squad
hopes to create 'chaos'

By Matt Pranger

posted 12/01/00

Senior Katie Earley is the lone upperclassman returning for the Friday Harbor High School girls basketball team. The Wolverines' tallest players are 5-foot-8 underclassmen. So, why is Coach Tracy Roberson enthusiastic about the 2000-01 season?

"We're a young team, the girls know that," Roberson says, "but they are some good things.... All the girls are committed to excellence, which is good. Last year we weren't all in the same boat."

This year's Wolverines will definitely be on the same boat for their Dec. 1 season opener -- they'll be taking the ferry to Lopez for a 2 p.m. contest. The next afternoon they host Grace Academy at 4:15 p.m.

Three Wolverines return with considerable court experience -- senior Katie Earley and sophomores Krysta Brem and Sissy Carlton. The other players are seniors Kelly Domico and Alisha Reitan, junior Kati Wilson, sophomores Kelsea Peterman and Julia Ross, and freshman Erica Percich.

"We're a young team, but most of them are in their second year in the program," says Roberson.

The Wolverines' coach hopes their speed and hustle make up for their lack of height. "We're gong to be scrappy and block out and get the job done," Roberson says. "Defensively, I'm hoping we're going to create some chaos and get some baskets."

She admits to making the same statement in her six previous seasons as the Wolverines' head coach, but notes this year is different. "We've got a good core of fast people," Roberson says.

Archbishop Thomas Murphy and Coupeville are likely the pre-season favorites to lead the Northwest A League, according to Roberson. "Darrington and La Conner also have the potential to be good," she adds.
