Wolverine sluggers crush Wolves

Fletcher Vynne cranked a two-run homer as Friday Harbor's baseball team clobbered Coupeville 13-3 in Northwest A League action Thursday, May 1.

Elliot Thomsen earned the win for the league-leading Wolverines, who improve to 8-3 in conference action after the home victory.

Vynne signs with University of California-San Diego

posted 04/30/03
Friday Harbor senior Fletcher Vynne won't need to be worrying about many early season rain-outs next season -- the standout catcher recently signed a letter of intent with the University of California-San Diego.

UCSD's warm, baseball weather, where Vynne can play year-round, and its baseball team's Top 20 Division II status appealed to Vynne. Bucknell University's baseball program also expressed interest in Vynne but the Division I school in snowy Pennsylvania was "too far away," Vynne said.

Vynne, a four-year baseball player for Friday Harbor and a competitor on regional select teams, would've preferred to stay closer to home. "I still kind of wish I could've attended a local college but it would've been one of the smaller schools," Vynne said.

Wolverines long-ball rally falls short

posted 04/30/03
Fletcher Vynne, Brady Ryan and Damon Woodward drilled homers for the Wolverines Tuesday, April 29, 2003 but the four runs off the long shots weren't enough: La Conner edged Friday 8-5.

The visiting Braves scored three runs in the first and four in the second. They went up 7-1 in the fourth.

Ryan, a junior, hammered his solo homer in the sixth. In the seventh, Woodward, a senior, rocketed a ball over the right-field fence for his first home run in his high school career. After Andrew Westphalen singled, Vynne pounded the ball.

Vynne singled in the Wolverines' first run in the first inning after Woodward singled and Westphalen hit into a fielder's choice and stole second.

Friday Harbor drops to 7-3 in Northwest A League action.
