Wolverine sluggers nip Lions in cardiac come-back contest

posted 05/07/03
Friday Harbor’s baseball team, after giving up seven runs and the lead in the seventh inning to Concrete, ripped the Lions for seven hits and seven runs in the bottom of the frame and won 13-12.

"That was one of the biggest come-back wins in Friday Harbor history," said stunned Friday Harbor head coach Rich Warin after the game.

"I’m so proud of these guys for not giving up," said assistant coach Steve Schramm. "They have a lot of heart."

Friday Harbor remains atop of the Northwest A League standings with a 9-3 record. Concrete drops to 6-5 and fourth in the conference.

Starting pitcher Elliot Thomsen, who was taken off the mound in the final frame, redeemed himself after a couple of defensive miscues by singling in the winning run.

Friday Harbor went through the order in the final inning. With one out, Thomsen reached base on balls in his first at-bat. Brady Ryan was hit by a pitch and Danny Cumming singled in pinch-runner Jesse Woodruff. Peter Shanks rapped a base hit and Ryan scored. Then Adam White, who relieved Thomsen in the top of the inning, singled in Cumming. Timmy Aylward smacked a single, driving in Shanks and White. After the Lions walked Damon Woodward, Andrew Westphalen cranked a double and Aylward scored. Fletcher Vynne was intentionally walked before Thomsen singled in Woodward for the game winning run.

Concrete went up 3-0 in the first inning. Friday Harbor put a run on the board in the second after Cumming sacrificed. Vynne drove in another run on a fielder’s choice in the third.

The Lions added two runs in the top of the fifth and led 5-2 but the Wolverines regained the lead by scoring four in the bottom of the inning. Chas Lawson singled before Aylward connected for a single and then stole a base. Woodward drove in a run on a fielder’s choice. Westphalen doubled in two runs. Vynne and singled and stole second before Ryan drove in a run.
