Wolverines clinch first place in 20th inning of doubleheader

posted 05/11/03
Friday Harbor secured at least a share of the Northwest A League crown by rallying for a 13-9 victory in the first game of a doubleheader against Archbishop Murphy Saturday, May 10 and an 8-7 come-from-behind win in the 13th inning of the second game.

Maude Cumming, mother of Wolverines Danny and Timmy Cumming, summed up the five hours of baseball: "That was a fabulous tripleheader."

"I'm exhausted," said Friday Harbor coach Rich Warin after the Wolverines third come-from-behind win in five days. "I'm proud of them because they didn't give up again. Overwhelmingly over-proud."

Fletcher Vynne, in his first high school appearance on the mound, threw five shut-out relief innings in the two wins that upped the Wolverines conference record to 11-3. "That's my biggest, first and hopefully not last (pitching appearance)," said Vynne, who usual is behind the plate.

Brady Ryan, who started the second contest but exited after while the Wildcats built a 7-0 lead, drove in the winning run. Vynne was hit by a pitch and advanced to second before Ryan bounced one between the Wildcats third baseman and shortstop. "They were playing in close," Ryan said."I was trying to lift the ball to the outfield. I hit a little chopper. I'll take that."

Friday Harbor leads La Conner (10-4) by one game with one contest remaining -- a home game against Orcas (0-13) at 2:45 p.m. Tuesday, May 13. The Wolverines beat La Conner twice this year and will be the No. 1 seeded Northwest A League team in the Class A Regional Tournament. The tourney is Friday and Saturday, May 23-24 at a site to be determined.

The Wolverines knocked Archbishop Murphy (8-6) out of playoff contention as the top two teams in the league advance to Regionals. Concrete is 7-5 and Coupeville 4-10.
