Friday Harbor baseball team earns league title, state berth
posted 05/14/03
The Wolverines finish Northwest A League play 12-3. La Conner and Concrete tied for second at 10-5. Friday Harbor is one of 16 teams advancing to the Class A State Baseball Playoffs. The Wolverines enter a State Regional Playoff as District 1’s top seed and play a first-round Regional game Saturday, May 24 at Enumclaw. If they win that contest they advance to the Regional final the same day. The state’s four Regional champs advance to the State Final Four in Yakima Friday, May 30 and Saturday, May 31. Senior Damon Woodward hurled the final inning for the Wolverines. "It was great to see Damon come in and get the save in his final home game of his high school career," joked Friday Harbor coach Rich Warin.
Senior Timmy Aylward smacked a couple of singles in his last appearance before the home crowd and Fletcher Vynne performed solidly. "Timmy and Fletcher are the hardest working kids. They have a great spirit, great attitude," said assistant coach Steve Schramm. The youngest Wolverine -- batboy and goodluck charm Justin James -- patted like a "ping-pong ball" during a seven-run comeback victory earlier this season. The Little Leaguer isn’t ready for the season to end. "It’s been really fun talking and chatting with the players on the whole team," James said. "You can can definitely tell when they’re down. It’s really fun when they’re up." Orcas went up 3-0 in the top of the first inning. Chandler Stone and Zach Lefton reached base on balls and then Shane Welch slammed the Vikings only homer of the season. Brady Ryan came in threw three-plus shut-out innings for the Wolverines and Peter Shanks was key in the Wolverines’ four double-plays. "Peter had a terrific game," Warin said of the freshman who also hit a single and double. The Wolverines scored in each innings. Elliot Thomsen cracked a triple. Aylward and Andrew Westphalen each hit a pair of singles. |
