Rod Turnbull directed the Friday Harbor boys basketball to a 61-59 come-from-behind win in his first appearance as the Wolverines' head coach in the building bearing his father's name.

"It's nice we could learn a few lessons and win at the same time," Turnbull said of the season-opening, non-league victory over Mount Vernon Christian.

"It was nice we didn't give up," Turnbull said of his players who are learning a new system.

"We played 10 and all 10 guys contributed," he added.

Friday Harbor's gymnasium is named after Turnbull's late father Dean, who coached the Wolverines for several years. "It's been a strange feeling, having the opportunity to coach in this place after my Dad," said Turnbull, a Friday Harbor alum.

Senior Danny Johnson paced the Wolverines, who came from eight points down in the second half. Johnson pumped in 25 points, including the victory-clincher with 10 seconds to go.

"We played a pretty good team game," Johnson said.

Johnson praised Turnbull. "He's a great coach. The whole team team respects him."

Mount Vernon Christian led 52-44 at the start of the fourth quarter but the Wolverines closed the gap to 57-54 on Tyler Roberts’ jumper and a steal and lay-in with about four minutes left. Nik Grah, who also had a swipe and layup earlier in the period, swiped the ball from the stalling Hurricanes and was fouled. He sank two free throws and Friday Harbor trailed by a point.

Johnson hit a short jumper and the Wolverines led 58-57 with 1:16 to go. After a teammate missed a free-throw shot, Johnson snatched the rebound from a Hurricane and dumped the ball back in with 10.8 seconds on the clock.

Johnson’s put-back put the Wolverines up 60-57. It provided the winning margin as Mount Vernon’s Kris VanderKooy was fouled while shooting a game-tying three-point shot with 3.3 seconds remaining. VanderKooy, who led the Hurricanes with 15 points, hit the first free-throw, missed the second and made the third.

Nine Wolverines scored in the contest. Travis Coulter contributed 8, Brady Ryan 7, Grah 5, Roberts 4, Danny Herbert 4, Damon Woodward 3, Roberts 4 and Fletcher Vynne 1.
