Friday Harbor boys stay in playoff huntposted 02/03/03
"It was a big step for us," Friday Harbor coach Rod Turnbull said of the road victory. The Wolverines are 3-5 in the Northwest A League and can finish tied for third if they win at Orcas Tuesday, Feb. 4 and beat La Conner at home Friday, Feb. 7. The top two Northwest A League finishers receive automatic berths to the Tri-District Tournament. The third-place finisher playoffs for a berth. "We haven't given up. We still have a chance," Turnbull said. Friday Harbor led Concrete 27-25 at the half but the Lions went up 51-41 by the end of the third period. The Wolverines, boosted by hitting 14 of 18 free throw attempts, rallied in the final quarter. "We gave up 26 points and then turned around and scored 26," Turnbull said. Matt Cowell led the Wolverines with 23 points. Nathan Smith chipped in 17 and Danny Herbert contributed 13. Travis Roberts pumped in 6. Fletcher Vynne scored 4. The Wolverines' offense also performed well. Friday Harbor made only 9 turnovers while shooting 21-for-36 from the field. "Our guys played solid the whole game," said Friday Harbor coach Rod Turnbull. Nathan Smith paced the Wolverines with 15 points. Danny Herbert contributed 12. Nathan Smith led all scorers with 21. Matt Cowell contributed 14 for the Wolverines. Danny Johnson added 11 and Tyler Roberts chipped in 10. Other Friday Harbor scorers were: Sean Anderson 6, Brady Ryan 4, Damon Woodward 3, Travis Coulter 2, Danny Cumming 2 and Fletcher Vynne 2. Bubba Smith paced the Lobos with 11. Chris Johnson pitched in 10. David Rypinski scored 5, Buck Batway 4 and Kestrel Arps 2.
