Friday Harbor drops to 3-6 in conference action and the Wolverines are eliminated from post-season play. Orcas and Archbishop Murphy, a 46-45 victor over Concrete Tuesday, are 5-4 in Northwest A League play and tied for second place with one league game remaining. The league's second-place finisher earns an automatic berth to the Tri-District Tournament. The Vikings travel to Concrete Friday, Feb. 7 and Archbishop Murphy is at Coupeville. If the teams finish tied, they will meet in a league playoff Tuesday, Feb. 11 at mainland site. The Northwest A League's third-place team plays a Chinook League team for a Tri-District entry. " We got to win Friday no matter what," said Orcas coach Gregg Sasan. Friday Harbor's offense and defense frustrated the Vikings most of the first period. Sophomore Josh Gage, who may be moving off Orcas next year, tipped in a ball at the end of the first period to spark an Orcas rally. The Wolverines held a 18-14 lead at the start of the second period but senior Jordan Gage capped a Viking 20-8 run by lofting a three-pointer from 10 feet outside the arc. " That just gets the kids excited. They think their unbeatable," Sasan said of Jordan Gage's long trey. Earlier in the second quarter, the Gages hit back-to-back three-pointers. | ||

At the end of the third period it was Josh's turn to post a buzzer beater. With a Wolverine defender leaping at his face, he drilled a three-pointer from the corner to put the Vikings up 53-39. Jordan Gage led all scorers with 20 points. Fellow Viking senior Arlen Plaister dumped in 18 and Chris Bennett chipped in 3 in his final home contest. Josh Gage and Justin Langworthy contributed 10 points apiece and James Talbot scored 1. Orcas edged Friday Harbor 15-6 at the free-throw line. The Vikings sank 15 of 21 free-throw attempts, or 71 percent. Friday Harbor shot slightly better from the line -- 75 percent on 8 attempts. After a solid first quarter, Friday Harbor's offense went cold from the field the rest of the game. " We just couldn't buy a bucket," said Friday Harbor coach Rod Turnbull. Tyler Roberts led the Wolverines with 12 points and Nathan Smith scored 11. Matt Cowell and Travis Coulter had 8 points apiece and Sean Anderson pitched in 6. Danny Johnson and Danny Cumming each scored 2 and Damon had 1. |
