A first-quarter drill paid off for the Friday Harbor girls basketball team who outscored Seattle Academy 21-5 in the first period Saturday, Dec. 7. The Wolverines increased their lead to 33-14 before winning the non-league road game 39-29.

Friday Harbor coach Becky Shanks’ players attempt to score 30 points in eight minutes during practice each practice. That drill has also improved their pressure defense.

"We were able to play man-to-man (defense) the whole game," Shanks said.

The Wolverines also had "a lot of blockouts" and did "a great job of rebounding," Shanks said.

Erica Percich led the Wolverines with 11 points and 19 rebounds. Julia Ross had 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Sissy Carlton scored 5 points, Krysta Brem 4 and Lizzie Herbert 3. Megan Vynne, Cassie Brophy and Lauren Brem each chipped in 2 points.

"Everybody contributed," Shanks said.

The Wolverines improve to 2-0.

Senior Krysta Brem sank a pair of free throws with 18 seconds to go, preserving Friday Harbor girls basketball season-opening 39-38 victory over Lakewood Friday, Dec. 6.

"Wasn't that a great game," Friday Harbor coach Becky Shanks declared after the home-court, non-league win over the Class AA Cougars. "Everybody played great as a team."

Shanks was proud of her team's intensity and intelligent play. "They played smart ball. They wanted it from the start. They wanted to win," she said.

Senior Julia Ross led Friday Harbor with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Brem finished with 10 points and a couple of crucial steals. Junior Erica Percich scored 10 points and grabbed 9 boards. Senior Sissy Carlton chipped in 2 points and 4 steals and Megan Vynne contributed 1 point.

The Wolverines and Cougars played even throughout the game. Friday Harbor's man-to-man defense stiffened in the fourth quarter though, limiting Lakewood's shot opportunities. Meanwhile, the Wolverines' offense made clutch shots down the stretch.

Percich made a rimmer that tied the game at 33-33 with 3 minutes, 45 seconds to go. Ross drove to the basket and connected a minute later. With two defenders on her, Percich fed the ball to Ross for a short jumper. Ross sank the shot for a 37-33 lead with less than two minutes to go.

The Cougars' Robyn Black kept the Cougars close by hitting of two free throws with 1:16 remaining. Stephanie Anderson, who paced the Cougars with 13 points, sank two free throws with 28.2 seconds left and Friday Harbor's lead was trimmed to 37-36.

Brem sank the win-clinching free throws but the Cougars drew within a point with in the final seconds on Anderson's jumper.
