Wolves upend Wolverines

Friday Harbor's girls basketball team kept pace with Coupeville in two quarters of 48-31 loss Friday, Jan. 24, but the host Wolves limited the Wolverines to 4 points in the other two periods.

Coupeville, the second-place Northwest A League team at 5-1, went up 17-2 in the first quarter. The Wolverines played the Wolves even at 10-10 in the second quarter and outscored them 17-11 in the third period. Coupeville rallied in the fourth with a 10-2 run.

"In the second and third quarters our players played their hearts out," said Friday Harbor coach Becky Shanks. "It was one of our best games in a long time."

Coupeville had a hard time deciding which Friday Harbor player deserved a sportsmanship pin, awarded by the home team after every home game. "Our whole team received the sportsmanship pin. They showed a lot of class," Shanks said of her players."

Krysta Brem led the Wolverines with 10 points and Megan Vynne contributed 7. Erica Percich had 6. Sarah Anderson, Sissy Carlton, Ashley Dixon and Cassie Brophy each scored 2.

Orcas girls burst by Friday Harbor in 4th period

Kimmy Clancy clicked in the fourth quarter, scoring 9 of her 13 points as the Orcas girls basketball team topped Friday Harbor 44-33 Saturday, Jan. 19, 2003.

"They beat us on the boards in the first half," said Orcas coach Craig Sanders. "We beat them on the boards in the second half. That’s what turned the game around for us."

Megan Sanders provided the early spark for the visiting Vikings, scoring 10 of her 12 points in the first period when the Vikings went up 12-9.

The Vikings increased their lead to 23-15 at the half. The Wolverines rallied in the second half, cutting Orcas’ lead to 4 at the start of the fourth quarter.

Orcas, led by Clancy’s shooting, went on a 10-0 run.

Holly Sare chipped in 8 points for the Vikings. Katie Wrightsman scored 4, Courtney Breslauer 2, Lindsey Tellefsen 2, Aly Taylor 2 and Mai-Lien Tran 1.

Erica Percich paced the Wolverines with 11 points. Krysta Brem scored 8, Megan Vynne 6, Julia Ross 4, Sissy Carlton 2 and Cassie Brophy 2.

Orcas improves to 2-3 in the Northwest A League. Friday Harbor is 1-4.

Braves beat Wolverine girls

La Conner defeated Friday Harbor 46-37 in Northwest A League girls basketball action Friday, Jan. 17.

Julia Ross led the Wolverines with 12 points. Krysta Brem scored 7, Erica Percich 6, Cassie Brophy 2, Megan Vynne 2, Ashley Dixon 2 and Kelsea Peterman 1.

La Conner’s Leslie Coone led all scorers with 21.
