The Wolverines scored 423 to the second-place Vikings' 456. Archbishop Murphy finished third with 489 and La Conner was fourth with 513. Matt Cowell finished second in the individual standings with a 75. Paul Guard placed fifth with an 8 and Nick Schuman was seventh with an 87. Kohl Metzger-Bell was on point back with an 88. Jonathan Hamilton and Hank Schuman each shot a 91. Orcas won the girls competition by scoring 99 under a modified Stableford Scoring method. Archbishop Murphy was runner-up with an 87 and Friday Harbor placed third with an 86. Friday Harbor freshman Pearl Schuman earned medalist honors in the girls action by scoring a 53. Ashley Spendiff was fourth. " It's pretty amazing what these kids did," Sandwith said. "He was the only Class A player selected," said Friday Harbor Golf Coach Rob Sandwith. "The bummer is, he's not going to be able to go." Cowell, who's broken two high school course records this season, already registered for a national-level junior tournament in Bend, Ore. This will be the third year Cowell competes in the contest. Sandwith expects Cowell will receive an invite to the Egbers Tournament next year. "Everybody's been hearing about Matt on the Mainland," the coach said of the consistent medalist. Seattle Lutheran fielded three boys players -- two less than required for an official match. The top five Wolverine boys scores were: Matt Cowell 37, Nick Schuman 39, Hank Schuman 41, Chris Benz 42 and Kohl Metzger-Bell 44. Matt Cowell had a 40 and Paul Guard a 41. Chris Benz, Nick Schuman and Kohl Metzger-Bell each shot 42 but Metzger-Bell's score was not used due to a tie-breaker. The Wolverines' Matt Cowell earned medalist honors with a 79 on the Cubs' home course. Chris Benz shot an 82. Hank Schuman had 86, Kohl Metzger-Bell an 87 and Nick Schuman a 90. "All our kids played very well today," said Friday Harbor coach Rob Sandwith. In girls action, freshman Pearl Schuman shot a 94 in her first 18-hole match. "Matt obliterated the course record," said Friday Harbor coach Rob Sandwith. Cowell tallied three birdies and five pars in shooting a 2-under-par 33. He broke the previous record of 35 held by Friday Harbor graduates Sven Melville and Jason Sears. The other Wolverines also helped their team post the best nine-hole round by a high school team on the San Juan links. "The rest of the team responded amazingly," Sandwith said. Hank Schuman chipped in a 38 for the Wolverines and his brother Nick had a 40. Kohl Metzger-Bell and John Hamilton each shot a 41. Even the Wolverines who didn't make the top-five cut performed well. "The kids have worked hard and they have a ton of potential," said Friday Harbor Rob Sandwith after his debut as the Wolverines' head coach. Friday Harbor's Matt Cowell shot a 41 for medalist honors. Kolh Metzger-Bell and Orcas' Chris Bennett tied for second with 43 strokes apiece. Friday Harbor's other top scorers were: Hank Schuman 45, Nick Schuman 48 and Chris Benz 49. The Viking finishers were: Arlen Plaister 44; Adam Shaefer 51, Winslow Hodge 58 and Courtney Breslauer 61. In girls action, Friday Harbor's Pearl Schuman shot a 53 and Kelly Baker had a 69. |
