Friday Harbor's softball team weathered a 45-hour delay before 10-running Charles Wright Academy Monday, May 26 for a berth in the Class A State Tournament this Friday and Saturday, May 30-31.

"We're going to state. We're going to state. We're going to Moses Lake," cheered Friday Harbor coach Kevin Carlton after the state-qualifying victory during the Class A Tri-District Tournament in Mount Vernon.

"We just got ourselves pumped up and that helped a lot," said senior Sissy Carlton, who drove in the game-ending runs of the 14-3 win.

The two senior captains played on the Wolverines 2001 squad that finished second in state and are ready to return to the Class A Sweet 16.

"We're just so excited," said Kelsea Peterman, the Wolverines other senior. "It (competing at state in Eastern Washington) is a great trip. We have a great team."

"It feels so good," Sissy Carlton said.

Friday Harbor finished fourth after Cascade Christian rallied for three runs in the seventh inning of the consolation final. The Cougars won 5-3.

The Wolverines started as unsettled as the weather Saturday. Seattle Christian broke out for four runs in the thrid inning and beat Friday Harbor 7-5 in the opening round.

The Wolverines went up 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning. Megan Vynne doubled and went home on Lauren Brem's single.

Seattle Christian added a run in the second and went up 5-1 after three innings.

Friday Harbor closed the gap to one run in the fourth. Lizzy Herbert and Kelsea Peterman reached base on balls before Brandie Miller ripped a triple.

The Warriors added a run in the fifth and sixth innings.

The Wolverines scored a run in the sixth and had the tying runs on base. Peterman reached base on balls and stole second. Miller singled Peterman home. Carlton hit a base hit.

Brem went around the bases to score the winning run in a 7-6 victory over Coupeville in a loser-out game Saturday.

The sophomore drilled the first pitch of the bottom of the sixth inning deep into the gap between the left- and centerfielders. She slid safely into third as the ball dribbled into the Coupeville dugout. An umpire awarded Brem home and the Wolverines had their winning margin.

Coupeville started the game by scoring two runs. Friday Harbor got on the board in the bottom of the inning. Carlton reached base on balls and Brem singled her home.

The Wolves went up 4-1 in the second. Friday Harbor scored one in the bottom of the inning. Peterman reached base on balls and went home on Cassie Brophy's single.

Friday Harbor tied the game in the third frame off base hits and savy baserunning by Herbert, Peterman and a double by Miller. The Wolverines added a run in the fourth on Carlton's single and a sacrifice by Brem. Peterman rapped her third of four singles in the fifth. She stole second and scored on Miller's base hit.

The Wolverines went through their order in building a 6-1 first-inning lead against Charles Wright. Carlton led off by cranking a triple and scored on Megan Vynne's single. Brem connected for a base hit and she and Vynne advanced on passed ball. Percich pounded a two-run double. Herbert singled home Percich. Peterman reached base on balls and Brophy had a base hit. Annie Bryant drove in two runs with a single.

The Tarriers scored a run in the top of the second but the Wolverines matched it in the bottom of the frame. Percich drove the ball deep for her fifth homer of the season. "That's the hardes ball I've ever seen hit in my years coaching slowpitch and fastpitch," Coach Carlton said. "She crushed that ball."

A gullywasher complete with thunder and lightning caused play to be suspended with the Wolverines leading 7-2. The Tarriers had runners on first and third with no outs when play resumed Monday but the Wolverine defense limited them to one run.

Friday Harbor added a run in the fourth off Vynne's double and singles by Brem and Percich.

Friday Harbor secured its second state berth in three years by rallying for eight runs in the sixth. With one out, Vynne connected for an infield single. Brem reached base on balls and Percich singled to load the bases. After another out, Peterman forced in a run by reaching base on balls. Brophy gained first on a fielding error and another run scored. Brem did the same before Mackenzie Raab singled in a run. Carlton smacked a game-ending two-run single.

Allowing one run in the third inning "was big," Coach Carlton said.

"That's how our team plays," he said. "We made the plays on defense. We pitched well and fielded well. We got our hits."

Carlton's daughter Sissy was key in keeping the Tarriers off the bases. The senior hurler and the Wolverine defense retired the Tarriers 1, 2, 3 in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. "She beared down," Coach Carlton said.

Friday Harbor scored first against Cascade Christian. Carlton reached base on balls and stole second. Megan Vynne hit a single, advanced Carlton to third and then stole second. Percich singled in Carlton.

Annie Bryant reached base on balls with one out. After another out, Vynne cracked a double on a 3-2 pitch. A fly-out ended the inning and game.
