Friday Harbor softball team opens Tri-District Tourney against Seattle Christian

posted 05/21/03
Friday Harbor's softball team is making a repeat appearance in the state-qualifying Tri-District Tournament this Saturday, May 24. The Wolverines, the Northwest A League runner-up, meet Seattle Christian, the No. Chinook League team, in the first round at 10 a.m. at the Skagit Valley Play Fields, located behind Skagit Valley College off LaVenture.

If the Wolverines win their first game of the eight-team tourney, they play at 11:30 a.m. in a semi-final against the winner of a first-round contest between Coupeville, the No. 3 Northwest A League finisher, and Cedar Park Christian, an Emerald City League team. The losers of the first two contests also play at 11:30 a.m. in a loser-out game.

The two teams winning their first two contests advanced to the championship. The top five Tri-District finishers advance to the Class A State Tournament in Moses Lake May 30-31.

Friday Harbor, 12-3 in league play and 15-4 overall is familiar with three of seven potential Tri-District competitors: In addition to Coupeville, Northwest A League Champion Archbishop Murphy and No. 4 NWAL finisher La Conner are also competing in the tourney. Cascade Christian, the No. 1 Chinook League team, and Charles Wright, the Emerald City League's other representative, round out the field.

Friday Harbor senior captains Sissy Carlton and Kelsea Peterman continued their steady play in their final home softball game of their high school career’s -- a 5-2 win over Orcas.

" They are the epitomy of team captains," said Friday Harbor coach Kevin Carlton. " They’re great role models for the rest of the kids."

Carlton notched the win for the Wolverines, who finish the season 12-3, one game back of conference champ Archbishop Murphy. Peterman reached base three times and played strong defense in rightfield.

Erica Percich rapped a single and triple for the Wolverines, who led 4-0 at the end of the fourth and thwarted a couple of Orcas rallies. Mackenzie Raab and Lizzie Herbert hit two singles apiece. Carlton, Cassie Brophy, Megan Vynne and Lauren Brem had a singled.

" It’s just the start of the second season," Carlton said. " Now the fun starts."

Friday Harbor advances as the No. 2 Northwest A League entrant to the Tri-District Tournament in Mount Vernon Saturday, May 24, 2003.
