Friday Harbor Girls Softball team clinched a trip to state by beating Charles Wright Academy 14-3 today, May 26, 2003. The Wolverines needed to win two games at the Tri-District Tournament May 24 to advance to state. They lost their first game to Seattle Christian 7-5, won their second game against Coupeville 7-6. In their third game, the girls were leading 7-2 against Charles Wright when rain caused the game to be suspended until today at noon.

After beating Charles Wright, the Wolverines played Cascade Christian to determine third- and fourth-place. Friday Harbor came in fourth after losing to Cascade Christian 5-3.

Friday Harbor beat Coupeville 7-6 to stay alive in the state-qualifying Tri-District Tournament today in Mount Vernon. Lauren Brem scored the winning run on a triple and a fielding error. Seattle Christian beat Friday Harbor's softball team 7-5 in the first game. The Wolverines need to win two games to make it to state. They next play Charles Wright beginning shortly.

Friday Harbor softball team opens Tri-District Tourney against Seattle Christian

Friday Harbor's softball team is making a repeat appearance in the state-qualifying Tri-District Tournament this Saturday, May 24. The Wolverines, the Northwest A League runner-up, meet Seattle Christian, the No. Chinook League team, in the first round at 10 a.m. at the Skagit Valley Play Fields, located behind Skagit Valley College off LaVenture.

If the Wolverines win their first game of the eight-team tourney, they play at 11:30 a.m. in a semi-final against the winner of a first-round contest between Coupeville, the No. 3 Northwest A League finisher, and Cedar Park Christian, an Emerald City League team. The losers of the first two contests also play at 11:30 a.m. in a loser-out game.

The two teams winning their first two contests advanced to the championship. The top five Tri-District finishers advance to the Class A State Tournament in Moses Lake May 30-31.

Friday Harbor, 12-3 in league play and 15-4 overall is familiar with three of seven potential Tri-District competitors: In addition to Coupeville, Northwest A League Champion Archbishop Murphy and No. 4 NWAL finisher La Conner are also competing in the tourney. Cascade Christian, the No. 1 Chinook League team, and Charles Wright, the Emerald City League's other representative, round out the field.
