Friday Harbor senior Nathan Smith took second in the long jump and eighth in the high jump at the Class A Track and Field Champions Friday and Saturday, May 30-31, 2003. Freshman Madison Judkins earned her first medal by finishing fifth in the 3200-meter run at Eastern Washington University in Cheney and junior Karen Morrill placed 12th in the javelin.
"It was awesome. The state's always fun," Smith said. "It was a good experience."
"We had a lot of fun," Judkins said.
Smith leaped 21 feet, six inches in the long jump Saturday. He scratched by .25 inches on an attempt that was more than a foot farther than any other competitor, said Friday Harbor coach Greg Hertel. Levi Morris of Lake Roosevelt, who Smith edged last year for first place, won this year's event with a leap 1.5 inches longer than Smith's.
"I was mostly disappointed about my last jump," said Smith, who also scratched on another try that would've been the winning mark.
A "stinking downpour" dampened the high jump and many other events Friday. Smith, who the event last year with a 6-5 mark, tied for eighth with a leap of 5-8. "I should have done better," Smith said.
Although Smith didn't win gold at the state championships this year, he won some green to help pay for college at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff. While attending a freshman early registration program in Portland, Smith's name was drawn for a $22,000 "Catch A Dream" scholarship. "It was awesome," said Smith, who plans compete in track and field at the NCAA Division I school.

Judkins, who didn't plan to run track at the start of the season, ran the 3200 in 12:17.59.
"I expected to do a little bit better but I did well," Judkins said. "I was happy with what I got."
The skies cleared and the temperature climbed when Judkins took to the track for eight laps. She was running at a 11-minute, 38-second clip but the temperature in the 80s slowed her in the fifth lap. "The heat got to me pretty bad," she said.
Judkins plans to keep training and return to Cheney next year. "I had to learn the ropes. Now I'm prepared for next year....I'm planning to do better and better every year," she said.
Junior Karen Morrill threw the javelin 97-03.
