Smith eclipses Tri-District long jump marksposted 05/27/03
"All the kids did a great job," Friday Harbor coach Greg Hertel said. "Our Tri-District is like New York -- if you can make it there you can make it anywhere. That's how tough it is." Smith broke the Friday Harbor record in the long jump last year, jumping 22-4. He leaped 22-1 at Tri-District this year and attributed his best mark of this season to his mother Gigi ?????. "It was my Mom telling me to run faster," Smith said. The three-sport standout cleared 6-2 in the high jump at Tri-District. He won last year's state title with a 6-5 jump. Smith also competed in the javelin but after setting a district record the week before had an off day during Tri-District. He placed 11th with a 127-6 effort. Morrill placed fourth at Tri-District after throwing the stick 101-3. "It's a breath of fresh air," said of returning to the state meet. She finished eighth in state last year with a 106-2 throw. A miscalculation almost cost her a state-qualifying mark. "I didn't think I was going to make it. I almost didn't make it to the finals," Morrill said. The junior finished eighth in the preliminaries but realized she wasn't throwing well off her best marks. Morrill realized she miscalculated her running distance, shorting herself nearly 20 feet. "I was very happy just to make it," she said. Judkins "ran a fabulous 3200," Hertel said. "She saved 20 seconds off her personal record and finished fourth. That's a really strong showing." The beginning runner came one place shy of a state berth in the 1600 run. She finished sixth with a 5:36.65 time. Friday Harbor's boys 4 x 100 relay team of Smith, senior Danny Johnson, senior John Marsh and sophomore Tyler Roberts improved on their best time of the season by more than a half-second but placed seventh with a :45.05 time. "We ran a PR but the other teams were so darn fast," Johnson said. "I wish the relay team was coming with me," Smith said. Catherine Grosjacgues narrowly missed a return trip to state. The hard-working senior tied for sixth in the high jump. Grosjacques cleared the bar every time until her first attempt at 4-8. Freshman Fahren Carlson finished 11th in the high jump with a 4-2 effort. Roberts and senior Drew Allen finished sixth and seventh in the discuse with tosses of 123-1 and 115-9. Marsh ran the 400 in :52.35, good for seventh place. Andrew Teasdale, who finished ninth in the 800 preliminary race Thursday, May 22, expect to run in the finals. Thursday's eighth-placer was sick for the finals so Teasdale competed and finished seventh with a PR of 2:05.64. "That was Andrew's fastest race ever," Hertel said. "He was really doing a good job at the end of the season." Friday Harbor junior Lucas Franco encountered stiff competition in the long runs. He was ninth in the 1600 and 3200 with times of 4:45.99 and 10:29.65. Tri-District Championships
