Friday Harbor’s wrestling team fell one individual victory short of beating Concrete in a home match, Friday Dec. 13. The Lions won 42-36.

"That’s as close as we’ve ever came to beating Concrete in a dual," said Friday Harbor coach Gordy Banry.

The Wolverines won five of eight contested matches as Timmy Aylward, Mike Pretz, Tyler Cornell, Britt Banry and John Marsh pinned a Lion. "I was really happy with the team," Banry added. "I wish we wouldn’t have been forfeiting so many weights."

Britt Banry’s first-round stick was his first individual victory. When asked if he was extra proud of his son’s first victory, Banry said, "Whenever you see any kid win his first match it’s pretty awesome."

Cymbalista opens season with a pin

posted 12/10/02
Chad Cymbalista pinned his Granite Falls foe but the Wolvlerines lost the other contested matches in their home and season opener Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002. The Tigers won 46-18.

"Chad surprised me how well he wrestled," Friday Harbor coach Gordy Banry said.

Cymbalista pinned Jon Rutherford with one minute, 24 seconds to go in the second period of the 171-pound match.

The visitors pinned four Wolverines. "The Granite Falls wrestlers were really impressive," Banry said.

However, the Wolverines were tough on the mat well into most of the matches.

"Tyler (Cornell) wrestled well defensively. If he threw a little bit of offense in there he’ll be doing something," Banry said of the grappler who lost by a 17-4 decision.

Banry moved several wrestlers up a weight class so there would be more contested bouts. "We were scrimping just to fill weights," he said.

Injured wrestlers and some who haven’t put enough required practice also hurt the Wolverines showing.
