Clancy and Sanders selected to All-League First Team

Orcas' senior forward Kimmy Clancy and freshman guard Megan Sanders earned positions on the Northwest A League Girls Basketball All-League First Team.

Senior guard Brianne King of Coupeville was voted Player of the Year. The other First Team members are: Lauren Coate, senior forward, Archbishop Murphy; Lisa Coate, freshman forward, Archbishop; Erica Lamb, senior guard, Coupeville.

Second Team members are: Erica Percich, junior forward, Friday Harbor; Trisha Terhar, senior guard, Archbishop Murphy; Anne Buher, senior center, La Conner; Amy Mouw, senior guard, Coupeville; and Jackie Lewis, sophomore guard, Concrete.

Friday Harbor won the Sportsmanship Award. Bill Kelley of Archbishop Murphy and Greg Oldham of Coupeville shared Coach of the Year honors.


Viking girls end season with a win

Orcas girls basketball team finished the season with a 62-36 victory at Concrete Friday, Feb. 7.

Kimmy Clancy led all scorers with 23 in her final high school game for the Vikings and fellow senior Katie Wrightsman had 18. Senior Courtney Breslauer pitched in 2 and freshman Megan Sanders scored 19.

The Vikings finish the season third in the Northwest A League with a 4-5 record.


Orcas girls romp in final home contest

Freshman Megan Sanders scored a career-high 29 points as Orcas defeated Friday Harbor 61-32 Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003.

"Obviously, we were clicking and they weren't," said Orcas coach Craig Sanders.

The Vikings expanded a 13-8 first-quarter lead to a 29-15 margin at the half.

Katie Wrightsman scored 13 points in her final game before the home-island fans and fellow senior Kimmy Clancy contributed 8. Courtney Breslauer, the Vikings' other senior, chipped in 4.

Hollie Sare, Mai-Lien Tran and Makenna Bauder scored 2 apiece for the Vikings and Lindsey Tellefesen had 1.

Erica Percich led the Wolverines with 8. The other Friday Harbor scorers were: Krysta Brem 6, Sissy Carlton 5, Cassie Brophy 4, Megan Vynne 3, Katie Shanks 2 and Natalie Chevalier 2.

Orcas girls burst by Friday Harbor in 4th period

Kimmy Clancy clicked in the fourth quarter, scoring 9 of her 13 points as the Orcas girls basketball team topped Friday Harbor 44-33 Saturday, Jan. 19, 2003.

"They beat us on the boards in the first half," said Orcas coach Craig Sanders. "We beat them on the boards in the second half. That’s what turned the game around for us."

Megan Sanders provided the early spark for the visiting Vikings, scoring 10 of her 12 points in the first period when the Vikings went up 12-9.

The Vikings increased their lead to 23-15 at the half. The Wolverines rallied in the second half, cutting Orcas’ lead to 4 at the start of the fourth quarter.

Orcas, led by Clancy’s shooting, went on a 10-0 run.

Holly Sare chipped in 8 points for the Vikings. Katie Wrightsman scored 4, Courtney Breslauer 2, Lindsey Tellefsen 2, Aly Taylor 2 and Mai-Lien Tran 1.

Erica Percich paced the Wolverines with 11 points. Krysta Brem scored 8, Megan Vynne 6, Julia Ross 4, Sissy Carlton 2 and Cassie Brophy 2.

Orcas improves to 2-3 in the Northwest A League. Friday Harbor is 1-4.
