Shanks, whose dinger over the left-field fence was his first home run of high school career, also hit a single and two doubles and finished with five RBI. "It's always good to beat La Conner," the junior catcher said. "I think the team played a complete game." Andrew Westphalen also drilled a two-run homer over the left-field fence for the Wolverines and Danny Cumming hit a single and a two-run double. Eric Rothlisberger had two base hits and Jesse Woodruff doubled. Elliot Thomsen preserved the victory for the Wolverines, who improve to 6-2 in the Northwest A League and 11-2 overall. Thomsen relieved Ian MacDougall in the top of the ninth inning with one out and Brave base runners on second and third. Thomsen struck out the first batter he faced and with the count 3-and-2, he slid a curve ball past a La Conner hitter for the final out. La Conner went up 2-0 on a homer during the first inning and added a run in the second inning but the Wolverines scored five runs in the bottom of the second frame. Starting Friday Harbor pitcher Sean Griffith was hit by a pitch and Woodruff rapped a double. Danny Cumming doubled, driving in two runs. Shanks singled him home and Westphalen crushed a pitch for his homer. Shanks connected for a two-run double in the third and the Wolverines led 7-3. La Conner responded with a grand slam in the fourth. Cumming led off the fifth inning with a single and went home after Shanks rap cleared the fence. | ||
