Westphalen’s homers key Wolverines’ win

Andrew Westphalen hammered a two-out, game-winning, three-run homer in Friday Harbor’s 11-10 Game 1 victory at Concrete Wednesday, April 21. The senior shortstop crushed another three-run homer in the second game, breaking open the contest that the Wolverines won 7-2.

"It was a nice way to cap it off," Westphalen said of his final trip to Concrete. "It was nice memories."

By sweeping the doubleheader, Friday Harbor moved into first place in the Northwest A League. The Wolverines are 8-2 in conference action. The Lions are 7-3.

Westphalen was facing two strikes and two outs when he smashed his first homer. " He gave me a fastball I was able to hit to the boondocks," said Westphalen, who finished the first game with two extra-base hits and four RBI.

Elliot Thomsen, who earned a save against La Conner the previous day, recorded the final five outs of the first game. He came in the sixth inning with bases loaded and one out. He struck out the side and recorded two more strikeouts in the seventh inning to shut down the Lions.

Thomsen went seven innings in the second game. On offense, he hit two singles, a double and had 3 RBI during the doubleheader.

Thomsen singled in a run in the first inning of the first game. The Wolverines added another run on Chas Lawson’s solo homer in the second frame. Concrete scored a run in the bottom of the inning and tied the game 2-2 in the fourth.

Friday Harbor added a run in the fifth when Westphalen tripled and was driven in by Brady Ryan, who hit into a fielder’s choice.

The Wolverines went up 7-2 in the sixth. Jesse Woodruff reached base on an error and stole second and third bases. Danny Cumming singled. Peter Shanks also rapped a base hit. Westphalen sacrificed before Elliot Thomsen singled and stole a base. Ryan connected for a base hit, driving in two runs.

Concrete went up 10-7 after erupting for eight runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Lawson reached base on balls and scored on Woodruff’s single. Shanks rapped a base hit and Westphalen’s three-run dinger put the Wolverines up by a run.

Friday Harbor went up 2-0 in the first inning of the second game. Peter Shanks was hit by a pitch and went to third on a double by Westphalen. Thomsen doubled them home.

Concrete scored two in the bottom of the second inning but were held from there.

Westphalen cracked his second three-run homer of the day in the third inning, He drove in Danny Cumming and Peter Shanks, who singled.

"He gave me another fastball I was looking for and I put my normal swing on it," Westphalen said.

The Wolverines scored another run in the fourth inning and went up 6-2.

Cumming led off the sixth inning with a triple and Shanks singled him home.
