The Pumas, who had a 17-game winning streak snapped by Life Christian in the first round of Tri-District, earned their first trip to the Class A State Tournament with the victory. The private Seattle school improved to 19-3. Friday Harbor finishes the season 14-8 and one win shy of their first State Tournament appearance in more than a dozen years. The Wolverine coaches "mostly wanted to win because we still wanted to work with these guys," Friday Harbor head coach Rod Turnbull said of the Wolverine players. "It was just a lot of fun," Turnbull added. "That's what is kind of disappointing. That's why I was hoping this group would go to a higher level." University Prep advances to a Tri-District consolation bracket semi-final against Archbishop Murphy, who lost in the second round to Bellevue Christian. The winner of that game will compete for third or fourth against the winner of the Life Christian-Cedar Park Christian contest. The losers of the consolation semi-finals play for fifth or sixth. King's and Bellevue Christian meet in the Tri-District championship. University Prep went up 30-18 in the first quarter against the Wolverines. Schultz, the son of Seattle Soncis owner Howard Schultz, went 5-for-5 from three-point range in that period and topped all scorers in the game with 27. "I don't think they missed one shot in the first quarter," said Friday Harbor coach Rod Turnbull. "Our defense was working .... They just played a really good game." When the Wolverines started to shut down Schultz on the outside, the Pumas moved inside to Ian McCormick, a 6-foot-7 post player. McCormick finished with 18 points, 8 blocked shots and 9 rebounds. "We had to take one of those things away," Turnbull said. The Wolverines, who rallied in several games this season, remained within comeback range at the half. They trailed 40-29 after a strong second quarter. The Pumas went on another scoring rampage in the third period, though, out-scoring the cold-shooting Wolverines 22-6. "Their third-quarter run really hurt," Turnbull said. "I thought we'd start hitting some in the second half but it never happened." Tyler Roberts and Chad Stoddard scored 13 points for the Wolverines. Matt Cowell chipped in 6, Danny Herbert 5, Nik Grah 3, Sean Anderson 2, Danny Cumming 2, John Hamilton 2 and Tyler Hart 2.
All of the teams seniors -- Cumming, Cowell, Herbert, Grah, Elliot Thomsen, Brday Ryan and David Low -- saw action in their final prep contest. Friday Harbor will miss the seven seniors next year but has a talented group coming up -- the junior varsity squad went undefeated in league action this season. "I hope they understand the leadership role the older players played," Turnbull said. Turnbull thanked his assistant coaches -- Mike Erickson, Oliver Noste and Jim McNairy -- for their hard work. "I had excellent help from the coaches," he said. "Jim and Oliver were especially helpful with the younger kids." King's sets back Friday Harbor 59-48
