La Conner holds off Friday Harbor boys

La Conner sank six free throws in the final 90 seconds to cut short a rally by Friday Harbor, Friday, Jan. 23. The visiting Braves won the Northwest A League contest 45-41.

The Braves made nearly three times as many trips to the free-throw line as the Wolverines. La Conner hit 19 of 28 free-throw attempts while the Wolverines went 2-for-11.

After scoring only 2 points in the second quarter, Friday Harbor entered the second half trailing 23-15. The Wolverines’ defense created several turnovers in the second half and helped the home team rally.

Friday Harbor trimmed La Conner’s lead to a point with 58 seconds to go. Chad Stoddard popped in a jumper and was fouled. He hit the free-throw and Friday Harbor trailed 40-39.

La Conner’s Chris McCren responded with two free throws before Friday Harbor’s Nik Grah yanked down a rebound and put it back with 30 seconds left. With the score 42-41, the Wolverines were a bucket from a win but they managed no more scoring. Jake Roth canned three insurance free throws for the Braves.

Grah led the Wolverines with 11 points. Chad Stoddard pumped in 9. Matt Cowell contributed 6 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Tyler Roberts scored 6 and Sean Anderson had 4.

Friday Harbor, La Conner and Concrete are tied for third in the conference with 2-3 records.

Friday Harbor boys overpower Coupeville

Tyler Roberts broke out for 15 points as Friday Harbor boys basketball team conquered Coupeville 64-41 in an away game Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004.

Matt Cowell contributed 14 for the Wolverines who improve to 2-2 in Northwest A League play. Chad Stoddard scored 10. The other Friday Harbor scorers are: Sean Anderson 8, Nik Grah 8, Danny Cumming 5 and Danny Herbert 4.
