Friday Harbor out-MUCKS Concrete

Friday Harbor’s football team slogged out one of their biggest victories in years by holding off Concrete 6-0 in a swampy, slippery, soggy Northwest A League contest Friday, Oct. 17.

"Eight years I’ve been waiting for this," said a beaming Shannon Plummer, assistant coach with the Wolverines during that time frame. "I can’t remember how it’s been since we’ve won Homecoming."

"We did awesome," said Jason Grone, an offensive tackle and noseguard. “We knew they were going to come out hard and we came out harder," said the junior who was knocked out momentarily during the physical game and had to watch from the sidelines. By the time the clock ran out, Grone had recovered and was celebrating with his teammates and one of the largest crowds in Friday Harbor football history.

"It was a battle down to the last minute but I think we had more heart and wanted it more," said Timmy Cumming, a Wolverine offensive guard and linebacker. "Everyone was pushing to win it for the whole team."

Friday Harbor improves to 1-1 in Northwest A League play and 4-2 overall.

"Concrete is 5-2 and is not a bad team,” said Friday Harbor coach Richard Ledford. “Our kids really wanted the win and went out and did it."

Friday Harbor held off Concrete 19-14 in a non-league season opener in the Lions’ den last month. That was Friday Harbor's first victory over the Lions in two decades. The Wolverines didn’t letdown in the second meeting. ”Our kids regained the intensity,” said Ledford. “That was the biggest key in this game.

Defense dominated the rest of the game, which was marked by several turnovers on the turf that soaked up more than three inches of rain in the previous few days.

"In the first half we really took care of the ball," Ledford said. "Our players kept working and overcoming the mistakes (in the second half). They have too much character to fold the tent."

The Lions gained solid field position off three Wolverine miscues in the fourth quarter.

Friday Harbor made an errant snap and Concrete took over on the Wolverines’ 22-yard line early in the final period. The Lions gained two yards on the ground but the Wolverine secondary broke up passes on the next three downs.

With less than four minutes to go, the Wolverines fumbled on their 27-yard line. Friday Harbor’s defense stiffened. It stuffed a rush and forced three incomplete passes.

The Lions revived their hopes of splitting with the Wolverines when a Lion defender intercepted a pass at mid-field with three minutes left.

Friday Harbor’s defense responded once more as Zac Wayner picked off a pass on the Wolverines’ 34-yard line with 1:57 remaining.

Danny Cumming, who’d made several outstanding stops at defensive back, made one more key play. The senior quarterback surged forward with the Wolverine offensive line and made a clock-draining first down.

Cumming finished the game making Ledford's preferred play. Surrounded by offensive protectors, the quarterback took a knee. "Smother the ball. That’s my favorite play," Ledford said.

Ledford thanked the cheerleaders, parents, pep band, school staff and students for a rousing pep rally after the Homecoing parade. “It was an emotional lift for our players,” Ledford said.
