Wolverines cool off Wildcats' potent offense

posted 11/03/03
Friday Harbor's football team limited undefeated, No. 1-ranked Archbishop Murphy to its least offensive production of the season but the Wolverines fell 21-7 to the visiting Wildcats on a chilly night Friday, Oct. 31, 2003.

The Wildcats improve to 4-0 Northwest A League play and 9-0 overall. The Wolverines drop to 2-2 in conference and 5-3 overall. Orcas Island is second in the league with a 3-1 record and Friday Harbor is tied for third with La Conner. To force a three-way tie for second and a tie-breaker, the Friday Harbor must beat Coupeville on the Wolves' turf Friday, Nov. 7 and the Braves must defeat the Vikings the next day. If that happens, Friday Harbor, Orcas and La Conner would playoff for the league's second playoff berth on Nov. 14 or 15.

Archbishop Murphy, who clinched a playoff berth with the victory, entered Friday's contest averaging more than 50 points per game. Their previous closest contest was a 41-22 victory over Cascade Christian on Sept. 27.

Friday Harbor held Archbishop to 13 points in the first half: a 10-yard touchdown run by Ben Waiss in the first quarter and a 7-yard run by all-star running back Jevon Butler in the second quarter.

The Wildcats scored their third touchdown on Doug VanderWel's 20-yard reception. Waiss carried the ball in for the two-point conversion and the Wildcats led 21-0.

Tyler Roberts scooted 62 yards after the ensuing kickoff to Archbishop Murphy's 20-yard line. The Wolverines failed to get in the end zone on that possession but later in the third period after Jesse Woodruff pounced on a fumble on the Wildcats' 40-yard line. Danny Cumming connected with Matt Cowell on a 14-yard pass and again on a 25-yard touchdown toss. Dwight Ware booted the extra point and the Wolverines closed the lead to 21-7.

"Oh my goodness, I think I'm losing hair," Wolverine fan Rex Guard said of the thrilling game.

Archbishop Murphy made a couple of key interceptions after Friday Harbor's defense made some strong stops and the Wolverine offense was driving. Boosted by fans who weathered freezing temperatures, thumping the Wildcats until the final buzzer.

Roberts romps in Wolverine victory

posted 10/29/03
Tyler Roberts gained 109 yards on 29 carries and scored two touchdowns in Friday Harbor’s 21-6 win at La Conner Friday, Oct. 24, 2003.

"It was a good feeling," Roberts said. "We just got in there and did what we wanted to do, what we had to do."

Roberts credited Friday Harbor’s line for their contributions in the victory. "Our offensive linemen gave the quarterback time and opened up holes," he said.

On defense, the Wolverines sacked La Conner’s quarterback seven times. "Our defensive linemen messed up their offensive strategy," Roberts said .

Friday Harbor is tied for second place in the Northwest A League with Orcas at 2-1 but the Wolverines need to upset top-ranked, undefeated Archbishop Murphy to keep hopes of a playoff berth alive. Friday Harbor (5-2) hosts the Wildcats (8-0) at 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31.
