Wolverines romp past Tarriers 48-6By Matt Pranger posted 09/15/03
"Our kids gave a good, strong effort… I'm pleased with their attitude," said Friday Harbor coach Richard Ledford. Senior Danny Cumming scored on long interception and kickoff returns and shared top tackling honors with junior Tyler Roberts. "Danny made a great effort to get into the end zone on each play," Ledford noted. Roberts and junior Winslow Cobos combined for more than 260 yards rushing and four touchdowns. The Wolverines scored first when Danny Cumming returned the kickoff 95 yards. The Wolverines, who started with some first-game "jitters," led the rest of the game. "Once on-track, our guys played with poise and confidence," Ledford said. Charles Wright's only score -- an eight-yard drive -- came after a Wolverine fumble deep in their territory. Danny Cumming followed that with a 95-yard kickoff return. Senior Danny Herbert, who booted the PAT after Cumming's first touchdown, added another and the Wolverines led 14-6. Friday Harbor increased its lead to 35-6 by reaching the end zone four times in the second quarter. Cobos scored on a pair of 6-yard runs. Danny Cumming picked off a pass and returned it 60 yards and Roberts scored on a 38-yard run. Herbert added a PAT after each touchdown. Ledford played "mostly a junior varsity team" in the second half and Friday Harbor tallied two more touchdowns. Cobos added an 11-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and the Wolverines led 41-6. In the fourth period, sophomore David Ahrenius dove a yard for Friday Harbor's seventh touchdown. Sophomore Dwight Ware kicked the PAT for the Wolverines final point of the game. The Wolverines finished with 361 rushing yards. "It was a good day on the ground for us," Ledford said. Cobos ran for 136 yards on 13 attempts and scored three touchdowns. Roberts gained 131 yards on 10 tries and scored one touchdown. Freshman Loch Stimpson rushed for 78 yards on four carries. Ahrenius finished with 20 yards on six attempts and one touchdown. The Wolverines went 6-for-7 in extra-point tries -- Herbert scored five and Dwight Ware one. Friday Harbor threw for 31 yards. Roberts connected with senior Matt Cowell on a 21-yard pass. Sophomore Chas Lawson tossed a 6-yard pass to Herbert and a 4-yard strike to senior Zach Lariviere. Danny Cumming and Roberts each had seven tackles. Lariviere, sophomore Timmy Cumming and freshman Brock McNairy made five tackles apiece. Stimpson, junior George Myers and senior Zac Wayner had three tackles apiece. Lariviere led the Wolverines' pass-pickers by intercepting three balls. Cumming, Cowell and Ware each had an interception. Ahrenius recovered a kickoff that was bobbled by Charles Wright's deep players. Ledford commended his assistant coaches -- Shannon Plummer Darren Scheffer and Greg Truesdale -- for their contributions. "They've done a really good job… I appreciate their enthusiasm." Friday Harbor (1-0) travels to Concrete (2-0) for a non-league contest at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19. |
