Wolverines 3-0 after beating Loggers

Story and photos by Sharon Kivisto

posted 09/27/03
The Wolverines spread the workload around as they beat the Loggers 35-14 Sept. 26, 2003. The five touchdowns were made by four players, key tackles and interceptions kept the Darrington team score down.

Junior Winslow Cobos scored the first touchdown with 3:22 remaining in the first quarter. The point after attempt was good and the Wolverines went up 7-0.

In the second quarter the Wolverines were called for holding. On third down and eight, a pass looked good to the many in the Friday Harbor crowd but not to the officials. It was ruled a fumble. Two plays later, Darrington scored, tying the game 7-7.

With 30 seconds left in the first half, junior Tyler Roberts ran in for a touchdown. A dead ball foul gave the Wolverines a second chance for the point after attempt. They successfully made the two-point conversion and went into the locker room up 15-7 at the half.

The third quarter started out with key tackles by sophomore Tim Cumming and an interception by senior Zach LaRiviere. The Wolverines ended up turning the ball over on downs to the Loggers at the six-yard line. The defensive line kept the Loggers from advancing. At third down and 10, Jesse Woodruff knocked down a pass. Darrington punted and the Wolverines had the ball at their own 32-yard line.

At fourth down and 17, quarterback Danny Cumming found Matt Cowell in the endzone and the Wolverines went up 21-7. The PAT was no good.

In the fourth quarter, Darrington turned the ball over on downs at the 48-yard line after the defense held them at fourth down and 2. On the next play, Roberts ran 52 yards to the endzone. The PAT was good and the score was 28-7.

Wolverine sophomore Chas Lawson intercepted a pass and ran 31 yards for the final Friday Harbor touchdown putting the Wolverines up 35-7.

With 2:31 left in the game, Darrington scored and converted for a 35-14 score. An onside kick was recovered by junior Jason Grone. The Wolverines turned the ball over on downs after. WIth 16 seconds left, senior Dan Alvarado intercepted a pass by Darrington and the game ended.

The undefeated Wolverines (3-0) next travel to Tacoma Baptist (Curtis Stadium) October 3, 2003.
