Orcas girls basketball team stemmed a late rally by Friday Harbor for a 44-37 Northwest A League victory Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004.

"Orcas tired tired in the fourth quarter," said Friday Harbor coach Steve Anderson. "If we hadn’t had three or four late fourth-quarter turnovers, we might have caught them."

"All-in-all, we played a pretty good game," Anderson said. "It was fun at the end. We had a good, hard comeback."

The Vikings led 38-26 at the start of the third quarter but the Wolverines trimmed that lead to 41-37 when Natalie Chevalier sank two free throws with a minute, 24 seconds remaining. Orcas point guard Megan Sanders made a steal and sank three free throws to clinch the win for the Vikings.

"Megan’s a really smart player. She controls the tempo and gets her teammates involved," Anderson noted.

Sanders led all scorers with 17 points. She also grabbed 11 rebounds and swiped 5 passes. Hollie Sare scored 10 points in the second quarter and finished with 12. Mai Lien Tran pulled down 10 boards and scored one point for the Vikings. Jenole Peacock contributed 6 points and 4 assists. Suzanna Wrightsman scored 3 points. Lindsay Curtis and Aly Taylor had 2 apiece and Tiffany Holtman added 1.

Orcas coach Craig Sanders commended Sare for her performance on offense and noted Jenole Peacock has been "a real force on offense."

"Tiffany Holtman was solid on defense. She’s as quick as can be," Sanders said. "It’s fun to watch her take someone on. She justs shuts them down."

"Friday Harbor’s ball movement was much better than the last time we played them," Coach Sanders said.

Taylor played in her first game of the season after undergoing toe surgery. "She’s getting her feet under her... She’ll be 100 percent better in the next game."

Madison Judkins paced the Wolverines with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

"Natalie Chevalier came in and played strong in the fourth quarter," Anderson said of the forward who finished with 8 points and 7 rebounds.

Sarah Anderson and Lauren Peterson chipped in 6 points apiece for the Wolverines. Annie Bryant, Megan Vynne and Lizzy Herbert each contributed 2 points.

Orcas improves to 2-1 in Northwest A League play and 7-4 overall. Friday Harbor is 1-2 and 2-8.
