This brings the Wolverines regular season record to 6-9-1 and 5-7 in league, earning the third place slot in the Northwest A League and a trip to play Seattle Academy, the District 2 #4 team, this Friday, Nov. 7, as the playoff season begins. The Wolverines clearly had the momentum during the match out-shooting the Concrete Lions almost 3-1 and maintaining possession in the Lion half for a majority of the match. The Lion's defense did an good job of forcing outside shots from the Wolverines and their keeper did an outstanding job of cleaning up any further threats on the inside. Shay Hopkins also provided excellent control at the midfield and set up many of the Wolverine's attempts on goal. Friday Harbor's defense held strong, denying opportunities on goal and keeping the ball in the Lion's defensive end for much of the match. Lizzy Herbert and Sarah Ware provided key plays and demonstrated solid leadership from the back field. Lillan Roquet and Natalie Chevalier also contributed great defensive and offensive effort for the Wolverines. The game remained scoreless through the two sudden-death overtimes, resulting in a shoot out. Friday Harbor had the first kick with Hopkins cleanly putting the ball away. Concrete shot wide to the right on their first kick. Ayanna Mancuso's kick struck the right post and ricocheted into the Lion's goal for Friday Harbor's second goal. Wolverine goalkeeper Anna McClaskey made an excellent save on the Lion's second kick, putting Friday Harbor up 2-0. Lillan Roquet followed for the Wolverines sending a hard shot into the back of the net. Concrete managed to get their third shot in, bringing the total to 3-1. Sarah Ware hit a ball with power, but it glanced off the cross bar and sailed wide. Friday Harbor Girls Soccer make or break game todayStory contributed by Doug McCutchen posted 11/01/03 Tonight they fell to Bellevue Christian in non-league play 2-4. Bellevue Christian has a long tradition of having an excellent soccer program with skilled individuals and solid sportsmanship. Last season the Wolverines lost to them 0-12. This year's performance was a marked improvement with outstanding play from goalie Anna McClaskey and captain Shay Hopkins who earned one goal in the match and led an inspired defense. Bellevue got on the scoreboard early earning a goal five minutes into the match. Not to be held back Ayanna Mancuso ripped a shot into the upper right corner on a dual assist from Elena Porten and Heather Jones. Mancuso and Porten combined for several excellent attempts on goal. Mara Lawrence contributed brilliantly on defense and helped with quick transitions onto offense. The vikings managed to get another ball in the back of the net during the first half, but Friday Harbor came out with purpose in the second half. Midway into the half Lillan Roquet took a corner kick placing the ball at the near post where Porten got a head on it, but was deflected. Hopkins ran in and fired a hard low shot into the far corner. The momentum swayed back and forth with keeper McClaskey making several incredible acrobatic saves, tipping the ball wide and proving perfect coverage of the Wolverine goal. Despite the excellent efforts by McClaskey and the defense Bellevue Christian managed to get a final score with 12 minutes left in the game.
