Friday Harbor golf team conquers La Conner

Paul Guard took medalist honors as the Friday Harbor boys golf team beat La Conner 197-252 Friday, March 26 at San Juan Golf and Country Club.

Guard hit a par 35. Chris Benz shot a 37 and Hank Schuman had a 38. Matt Cowell finished with a 41 and Jesse Pouillon tallied 46 strokes. "Jesse's come a long way," Sandwith said of the first-year golfer.

Marc Llewellyn paced the Braves with a 40.


Friday Harbor boys break course record
in squally winds against Lopez

Friday Harbor boys golf team snapped the high school course record for the second year in a row at San Juan Golf and Country Club. The Wolverine squad shot a 189 in buffeting wind Thursday, March, eclipsing last year's mark of 193. Lopez shot a 246 in the non-conference match.

"The boys played unbelievable, to break the course record in that cold and that wind… The water on the fountain on No. 9 hole was blowing sideways," said Friday Harbor coach Rob Sandwith.

Senior Matt Cowell pinned down medalist honors by shooting an even-par 35. Hank Schuman finished one stroke behind and John Hamilton shot a 37. Chris Benz tallied 40 and Jesse Pouillon had a 41.

Lopez's top five were: Josef Muska 45, Eric Russ 48, Evan McCoy 49, Mike Walvante 50 and Jared Holland 54.

Pearl Schuman shot a 50 as Friday Harbor won the girls contest 231-298. Ashley Spendiff and Sabrina Chan each shot 53 and for second with 53. Emerald Fire used 75 strokes in her first nine-hole round.

Lobo golfers and their results are: Isabelle Tetu 66, Michelle Burson 73,Melissa Ahneman 82 and Jessica Stephens 77.
