Cowell places 7th at Egbers

posted 05/11/04
Friday Harbor senior Matt Cowell finished seventh among 116 of the state's best high school golfers at the 23rd Annual Bill Egbers Memorial Golf Tournament Friday, May 7. Fellow Wolverine golfer Hank Schuman also made a strong showing.

Cowell finished the tourney at Skagit Golf and Country Club using 145 strokes, five strokes back of the winner. He shot a 75 on the first day, making the second-round cut by one stroke and ranking 35th of 40 advancing golfers. He rallied on the second set of 18 holes, shooting a 2-under-par.

"I didn't play that well in the morning," Cowell said. "I was pretty happy that I played better in the afternoon."

Cowell said competing against mostly Class 3A and 4A golfers was a good practice for the post-season.

Schuman shot a 77 on his practice round and stayed steady the next day, shooting another 77. He missed the cut by one stroke. "There were a bunch of 77s that didn't make the cut," said Friday Harbor coach Rob.

"I'm elated with not only Matt's play but Hank's play too," Sandwith said.

Cowell and Schuman -- the only golfers invited from a Class A school -- proved they could compete with players from large schools.
