Cowell finished the tourney at Skagit Golf and Country Club using 145 strokes, five strokes back of the winner. He shot a 75 on the first day, making the second-round cut by one stroke and ranking 35th of 40 advancing golfers. He rallied on the second set of 18 holes, shooting a 2-under-par. "I didn't play that well in the morning," Cowell said. "I was pretty happy that I played better in the afternoon." Cowell said competing against mostly Class 3A and 4A golfers was a good practice for the post-season. Schuman shot a 77 on his practice round and stayed steady the next day, shooting another 77. He missed the cut by one stroke. "There were a bunch of 77s that didn't make the cut," said Friday Harbor coach Rob. "I'm elated with not only Matt's play but Hank's play too," Sandwith said. Cowell and Schuman -- the only golfers invited from a Class A school -- proved they could compete with players from large schools. Guard medals in Friday Harbor golfers' victoryposted 05/11/04

"That puts the girls program on the map," said Friday Harbor coach Rob Sandwith said of the Wolverines' victory at Avalon Golf Club. "I'm so happy for these girls. They've worked hard all year," he added.Schuman finished with an 81 on the 72-par course. Under the Stableford-scored match, she compiled 63 points. "I'd venture to say there aren't a whole lot of girls in the state who shot an 81 this year," Sandwith said. Friday Harbor's Sabrina Chan finished second with 95 strokes and 49 points. Ashley Spendiff placed third with 98 strokes and 46 points. Emerald Fire shot a 138 and scored 9 points. The four Wolverine golfers' points summed to more than runner-up Archbishop Murphy's five golfers. Friday Harbor tallied 167 points. Archbishop Murphy scored 161 and Orcas had 58. Orcas Island's Kelly Baker finished seventh with a 113 and 32 points. The Vikings' Jenny Boucher qualified for the Tri-District Tourney by shooting a one-stroke-under-the-cut 59 on the back nine. Cowell bogeyed the first four holes and finished the front nine three strokes behind Archbishop's Ben Waiss. Friday Harbor coach Rob Sandwith explained Cowell's calm at the turn: "'Don't worry coach,' Matt said. 'I'll bring it back.'" The senior picked up four strokes on the back side and finished with a 3-over-par 75, one better than runner-up Waiss. Chris Benz finished fifth and also earned a medal for the Wolverines. Hank Schuman tied for seventh with an 87, but the Archbishop golfer he tied with won a scorecard playoff for the final recorded score. John Hamilton tallied an 88 for the Wolverines and Paul Guard had an 89. Orcas Island's Winslow Moran-Hodge finished sixth with an 86. Archbishop took team honors by capturing second, third, fourth and seventh places. The Wildcats tallied 417 strokes. Friday Harbor finished second with 424. La Conner placed third with 493 and Orcas was fourth with 575. "I'd rather have an off day yesterday and have the kids go and play well next week (at Tri-District) and go to state," Sandwith said. Cowell and Schuman will tune up for the state-qualifying Tri-District Tourney at the prestiguous Bill Egbers Memorial Tournament at Skagit Golf and Country Club on May 7. The top 116 prep golfers from across the state play in the invitational. "Bar none, it's the No. 1 high school golf tournament in Washington State," Sandwith said. Cowell dominated most matches he played this season and his coach expects the senior will make a solid showing at Egbers. "I think he'll represent us very well," Sandwith said. Friday Harbor's assistant coach Bob Benz will make the trip and play in the coaches' tourney. |
