"We were a little bit upset about that," said Friday Harbor senior Cowell. "We'd have liked to have won the team title but second is not too bad." Cowell tied for seventh in the individual standings and sophomores Chris Benz and Paul Guard tied for 12th. Guard was playing with Life Christian's Andrew Putnam when the Eagle eagled the par-3 hole. "He hit a great shot. Everybody was excited … except me," said Guard, who realized what the shot meant to the Wolverines. Putnam, who finished the tourney with a 140, hit his hole-in-one on the second round's back nine. That helped him finish first and his team rise to the top. Life Christian tallied 32.5 team points. Friday Harbor and Seattle Academy scored 28.5. Okanogan was third with 24. At the start of the season the Wolverines set a team goal: They wanted to bring home the Class A first-place trophy. "We didn't quite take all the hardware but we got the next best piece," Sandwith said. "I'm really proud of the kids," Sandwith said of the boys plus Pearl Schuman and Sabrina Chan, who competed in the girls state tourney. "They represented our school and our community very, very well." Cowell finished the tourney with a strong effort. He shot a 39 on the front nine and a 34 on the back nine for a 73. He tallied a 35-38-73 the first day. "I would've liked to have played better," Cowell said. "I can't be too mad about it though." The senior, who placed fourth in Class A last year and 10th as freshman, expects Benz and Guard and the rest of the Wolverines to be making another run at the team title in 2005. "They should have another chance," he complimented his teammates. Benz was pleased with his 149 score. He shot 38-37-75 for the second round and was 36-38-74. "It was a good score for me,"Benz said. "The field was really good this year. I think we can do better next year." Guard was "really happy" with his 38-34-72 first-round during his first day in state-level competition. The second round he went 38-39-77 for a 149 total. "I was really happy the team took second overall," he said. Guard, Cowell, Benz advance in state golf tourneyposted 05/24/04
