Five Friday Harbor golfers advance to state tourney

posted 05/14/04
Pearl Schuman placed second and Matt Cowell was fifth as the Friday Harbor boys and girls golf teams finished third in their Tri-District golf tournaments. Schuman, Cowell and Chris Benz will make return trips to the state championships. Sabrina Chan and Paul Guard also advance to state later this month.

"I'm extremely excited about our outing," Friday Harbor coach Rob Sandwith said of his team's play on Whispering Firs at McChord Air Force Base's Wednesday and Thursday, May 12-13.

The Friday Harbor girls placed in the Class A/B Tri-District team standings for the first time in the school's history. Ten days earlier they won their first league title.

"That was really special," Sandwith said. "To do it all in one year is unbelievable."

Schuman shot an 86 on the par-73 tied for first place but lost medalist honors to Bear Creek's Marianne Banton in a playoff. Chan finished seventh with a 108.

Ashley Spendiff didn't make the state cut but "her points were instrumental in us getting enough points for third place," Sandwith said.

Friday Harbor scored 92.5 points. Charles Wright won the tourney with 125 points and King's was second with 112.5. Archbishop Murphy finished fourth with 77.

"I'm extremely proud of the girls team," Sandwith said.

Friday Harbor's boys finished highest of Northwest A League teams. "The competition was very, very stiff," Sandwith said.

Cowell shot a 77 on the 72-par mens course and was tied for fourth. He dropped to fifth in a scorecard playoff.

Guard scored a 79 and finished ninth. Benz shot an 82 and placed 10th.

"I don't know if we've ever sent three boys to state," Sandwith said.

John Hamilton's 85 and Hank Schuman's 89 helped the Wolverines post a top-three finish.

Friday Harbor tallied 105.8 team points. King's won the Tri-District title with 128 points and Seattle Academy came in second with 111.8. Archbishop Murphy was fifth with 81.5.

The Boys Class A State Golf Tournament is May 24-25 at Columbia Pont Golf Course in Richland. The Girls Class A/B State Tourney is at the Tri-City Country Club in KennewicK the same dates.
