Friday Harbor’s softball team clipped Northwest A League leader Archbishop Murphy 1-0 in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday, May 1, 2004. The visiting Wildcats won the second game 7-2.

Sophomore pitcher Beth Kelsey, backed by some stingy defense, led the Wolverines to victory in the first game. Kelsey scattered five hits, struck out four batters and walked one.

"That was one of the best softall games I’ve ever been involved with," said Friday Harbor coach Kevin Carlton. "I’m not just saying that because we came out on good side of it."

Friday Harbor is 8-3 with four games remaining. Archbishop Murphy is 11-2 with two contests to go. Orcas is 5-4 and Concrete is 6-5.

The Wolverines scored the only run of the game in the third inning. Megan Vynne rapped base hit and stole second and third base before scoring on Natalie Chevalier’s sacrifice bunt.

Megan Vynne hit 3-for-3 for the Wolverines and had two stolen bases. Brandi Miller went 2-for-3.

Friday Harbor third baseman Lauren Brem and catcher Chevalier combined to prevent a Wildcat baserunner from scoring early in the game.
