"I'm really proud of them," Friday Harbor coach Kevin Carlton said of his players who advanced to the second day of the tourney. "After the loss to Onalaska they could've folded up the tent and gone home." The Wolverines didn't mentally go home to the islands but they crossed the plate six times in the first inning against Freeman. They went home four more times in the fourth and two in the fifth while holding the Scotties to three runs in the bottom of the opening frame. Senior first baseman Erica Percich pounded out three doubles. "Erica hit the ball really well," Carlton said. Sophomore rightfielder Annie Bryant led off the game with a hit, added another single and reached base on balls four times. "Annie got on base in every at-bat," her coach noted. Junior third baseman hit a single and a triple. Senior extra player Jessica Peacock rapped two singles and senior second baseman Brandie Miller hit a base hit. Sophomore hurler Beth Kelsey, after giving up two hits in the first inning only gave up two more in the next six innings. She struck out seven Scotties and walked two. "She's learning to become a great pitcher," Carlton said. Kelsey was backed by a stingy defense led by junior Megan Vynne. The shortstop broke a rope of a rap, backhanded another ball for an out and handled another sharp hit that should have scored a run. "I gave Megan the game ball. She made three spectacular plays," Carlton said. Powerful Onalaska scored its sole run against Friday Harbor with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inninng. If not for a fielding error, the Wolverines would have gone into extra innings against the Loggers, who outscored their regular season opponents by 200 runs. "That was a great game," Carlton said. Winning pitcher Shelly Hadaller struck out seven and Kelsey fanned six. The Wolverines next opponent was Toledo at noon on Saturday, May 29, 2004. STORY AND PHOTOS FROM TOLEDO GAME
